What was it that woke me?
On this night of the half moon,
What could it be that disturbed me?
On a night so serene.
Like a hand, it interrupted my slumber,
An alarm that shattered my dream,
Or perhaps a clap of thunder,
Traveling through this fine air from afar.

I wish there were at least some wind
So that I could hear the roar of the sea.
I long for this silence to be broken,
So absolute that it makes me think too much.
I wish I could find something to do,
I wish I could wake you so that we could talk,
But you are sleeping so soundly.
And I can't even play music.

Soon the dawn will come, and with it the sun,
And with the light, I will see that all is well.
I will be able to name this anxiety,
And perhaps I will fall back asleep,
And begin to dream once more.

Now I know what woke me
On this night so serene.
It is the fear that my future will be stolen
By some cruel twist of fate.
An earthquake, a sudden collapse,
An event beyond my control,
Like a distant war
Under the light of the half moon.

Soon the dawn will come, and with it the sun,
And with its light, I will see that all is well.
I will be able to name this anxiety,
I will watch you sleep and let you dream.
