Stillantibus ocellis

I lament the wounds of fortune,
With tearful eyes,
Because the rebel
Withholds her gifts.
It is true, as it is read,
Fortune has hair on her forehead,
But she is often followed
By bald opportunity.
On the throne of fortune
I was sitting high,
Crowned with the varied
Flowers of prosperity;
For all that I flourished
Fortunate and blessed,
Now from on high I have fallen
Deprived of glory.
The wheel of fortune turns;
I go down diminished;
Another is lifted high;
Too much exalted,
The king sits on the summit
Let him beware of ruin!
For beneath the axis we read,
Hecuba, the queen.
