Manchmal scheint es mir als gäbe es ein Wort,
Für leere Bäume, Phrasen und für immer fort.
Für links und rechts vom Bett ein Wörterbuch,
Das Scheitern oder den Versuch weiter voran zu gehn ohne Eitelkeiten.
Manchmal scheint es mir als gäb es einen Satz,
Der ohne viel zu wollen nicht nur die Wahrheit kratzt.
Der uns mit wenigen Worten sagen will, was wir wirklich wissen wollten,
Anstatt mit vielen, was wir nicht verpassen sollten.
Und manchmal scheint es wie ein Zeichen der Zeit,
Dass jeder ein Buch über sein Leben schreibt.
Wenn er gelangweilt und gefräßig ist, oder wenn alles mittelmäßig ist
Und niemand mehr zum applaudieren bleibt.
Manchmal scheint es mir als gäbe es Ideen,
Die nicht nur Zeit totschlagen sollen und vergehen;
Sich mit Wut und Recht den Platz erstreiten,
Oder versteckt im Dunkeln und bescheiden das eines Tages einmal wichtig sein wird sehen.
Manchmal scheint es mir als gäbe es Gesang,
Der die Zeit überdauert jahrhundertelang,
Sich nicht nur auf sein Recht verstellen, zur rechten Zeit das Wort ergreft und immer älter wird und doch mit der Zeit reift.
Manchmal scheint es wie ein Zeichen der Zeit,
Dass jeder ein Buch über sein Leben schreibt,
Wenn er gelangweilt und gefräßig ist,
Oder wenn alles mittelmäßig ist und niemand mehr zum applaudieren bleibt.
Manchmal scheint es mir als gäbe es ein Lied...

Signs of the Times

Sometimes it seems to me that there's a word,
For empty trees, phrases and forever gone.
