Llevaba un saltamontes
Y una espiga idéntico disfraz

Como un saltamontes

El viento que llevaba a la pradera
Con cansancios y pesares
Sorpresiva soledad
Solo ruinas tierras viejas de curtirse al sol
Y tardes de campiñas
¿Para quién cantaba yo?.

Yo soy pues el saltamontes
Que le canta a la llanura
Cuando sopesa de sueño y de calor
Cuando mecen con las tardes
Los sopores de las tumbas
De otros saltamontes
Que hubo antes que yo.

Luego me fui como aquel
Que se desangra
Como aquel que todo teme
Y todo debe al porvenir
Casi sigo siendo el mismo si no fuera
Porque ayer me hallé un ejemplo
Que se empeña en ser feliz.

Una duda tiene el canto en su destino
Y una y griega hay en la brecha que elegir
Y una cruz hay en la ladera y el silencio
Que apretaba entre los dientes
Cuando halle mi nombre ahí
Cuando dejaré mi tierra
Ha de ser siempre un acertijo
Cuando habrán de oír que digo la verdad
Y el camino que no acaba y me devuelve
A donde mismo ya me estoy desesperando
De intentar.

The Grasshopper

I carried a grasshopper
And an ear of corn, identical disguise
To the field that they toasted dust and sun
If perhaps they dedicated a song
Like a grasshopper
Sing with monotonous equality.

The wind that carried it to the meadow
With weariness and sorrow
Surprising solitude
Only ruins old lands to tan in the sun
And afternoons of the countryside
For whom did I sing?.

I am therefore the grasshopper
That sings to the plain
When it weighs with sleepiness and heat
When they rock with the afternoons
The torpor of the tombs
Of other grasshoppers
