That Goblin Your Memory

Oh, how I'd suffer if I were to wander again,
Following your memory,
That little imp greets me with a mischievous grin,
Then scurries away to hide,
Behind the curtains or through a patch of sunlight.
He's small, fragile, light, with a sweet color,
He jumps to the mirror on the sly, and when I look
I see only pain.

The other night, I saw him scribbling,
On a handkerchief, with great amusement,
But when I turned on the light, he leaped in fright
And disappeared into thin air.
The handkerchief had a few lines written,
Yesterday I dreamed, it said,

And in a dream, I dreamed the impossible,
I dreamed that I loved you again.

Then the day before yesterday, he paced around anxiously,
Calling out your name from time to time,
But I didn't want to think about him anymore,
So I tried to put him out of my mind.
At night, I heard him weeping,
But not as much as I did.
Yesterday, I know he was sick,
And by evening, he could no longer bear it.
And early this morning, for neglecting
Your memory, he died.
