Ψὲς τὸ βράδυ ἀπ᾿ τὴν παραλία, μπῆκα μέσα σ᾿ ἕνα ἀστικό,
νὰ μὲ πάει στὸν Προφήτη Ἠλία, τὰ παλιά τὰ στέκια μου νὰ δῶ.

Πῆγα Ποταμούδια καὶ Βὶξ στέρνες, νότα δὲν ἀκούστηκε καμιά·
πάψαν τὰ τραγούδια κι οἱ λατέρνες, λὲς καὶ ἤμουνα στὴν ἐρημιά.

Ἔκανα τὴ βόλτα μου στοῦ Τσάτσκα, ποῦ ῾ν᾿ τὰ χρόνια ἐκεῖνα τὰ παλιά,
κάθε βράδυ, λὲς καὶ ἦταν Πάσχα, ἄκουγες σαντούρια καὶ βιολιά.

Ἔφτασα στὴ στάση τοῦ Βλαμάκη, μὰ τὸ μαγαζὶ ἦταν κλειστό·
τράβηξα γραμμὴ γιὰ τοῦ Καϊνάκη, γιὰ νὰ πιῶ νερὸ νὰ δροσιστῶ.

Παράδεισο κι Ἀκρόπολη, τὰ βρῆκα γκρεμισμένα·
μπαίνω ξανὰ στὸ ἀστικό, μὲ μάτια βουρκωμένα.

Lie Yesterday Evening

Yesterday evening from the beach, I got on a city bus,
to take me to Profitis Ilias, to see my old haunts.

I went to Potamoudia and Viks sternes, no music was heard;
the songs and the street organs have stopped, as if I was in the wilderness.

I walked around Tsatskas, where in those old days,
every evening, as if it were Easter, you could hear the santouri and the violin.

I arrived at the Vlamakis bus stop, but the shop was closed;
I headed for Kainakis, to get a drink of water to cool down.

Paradeisos and Akropolis, I found them demolished;
I get back on the city bus, my eyes filled with tears.
