The Violinist's Suit

It was the violinist's suit that we saw waving
The day the war passed through the cathedral's ruins
Behind the shadows and the dust, to sleep and hunger
To the Poor House on asphalt and tar

So the wind moved it as a flag waves
Like an angel in the sky, like a torch in the evening
And we saw with our eyes at the end of the prayer
The wounded being shot on the prison gate

And that was the only sound, and to that sound we marched
In the black water of the rice paddies and through the fields without grain
Where the violinist's suit sat waiting
For the prisoners to return like waves from the sea

But then the army came forward and we shouted "Murderers!
Stop! Can't you see, we are the children!"
Until everything turns red and you can't look anymore
Everything turns red and you mustn't look

There was no way to go forward, no way to go back
There was no route or direction to recover
Only the violinist's suit, like a darker stain
Like a ghost in the forest inside our fear

And suddenly everything stood still in the immanence of the storm
When the ephemeral became eternal, like a statue of salt
When the violinist's suit was buried in the sky
Like an image, a painting, like something that wasn't true

So we heard the loud redundancy of the bells in the air
Like a memory that made you cry, like the smell of bread
Like seeing the sun rise on the other side of the wall
And carpenters and philosophers building the future
