Le chêne un jour dit à la tortue
Que vous êtes belle, que vous courez bien!
Votre voix qui m'est inconnue
Doit être aussi fraîche que l'air du matin
La tortue, alors secrètement flattée,
Aspira très fort et se mit à chanter
Et le lièvre dans le bois mouillé
Pour l'entendre, cessa de brouter.
Mais hélas la pauvre tortue
Ayant sans relâche chanté tout l'été
Se trouva toute dépourvue
A la fin d'automne sans rien à croûter
Elle alla trouver la cigale aux yeux verts
Poétesse cotée dont elle aimait les vers
Qui lui dit: "Non, j'ai ma locataire
La fourmi qui est dans la misère."
Alors le corbeau, le loup et l'agneau
Le coche et le chat et le souriceau
L'huître et les plaideurs
L'aigle et le chasseur
Décidèrent d'agir en sa faveur.
Et chacun s'en fut, l'âme émue
Faire à la tortue un présent discret
Le renard offrit en partage
Un peu du fromage
Qu'il avait volé
Le grand chêne donna de ses glands par kilos
Le roseau donna la moëlle de ses os
Et le lièvre offrit à sa consœur
Une terrine de pâté de chasseur
La fourmi donna des myrtilles
Et le rat des villes quelques ortolans
La cigale enfin convaincue
Donna à la tortue la clé de ses champs
À sa cour, le lion donna un grand gala
Tous heureux de vivre, on rit et l'on dansa
Mais les hommes ne s'entendaient pas
Le jour même la bombe éclata
Du feu, du fer
Fumée dans l'air
Et ma fable s'arrête là.

The Oak Tree and the Turtle

The oak tree once said to the turtle
How beautiful you are, how well you run!
Your voice, which is unknown to me
Must be as fresh as the morning air
The turtle, then secretly flattered,
Drew a deep breath and began to sing
And the hare in the wet woods
Stopped browsing to hear it.
But alas, the poor turtle
Having sung tirelessly all summer
Found herself entirely destitute
At the end of autumn with nothing to munch on
She went to find the cicada with the green eyes
A listed poet whose verses she loved
Who said to her: "No, I have my tenant
The ant who is in misery."
Then the crow, the wolf, and the lamb
The coach, the cat, and the little mouse
The oyster and the pleaders
The eagle and the hunter
Decided to act in her favor.
And each one went away, their souls moved
To give the turtle a discreet present
The fox offered to share
A little of the cheese
That he had stolen
The great oak tree gave her kilos of its acorns
The reed gave her the marrow of its bones
And the hare offered to his fellow creature
A terrine of hunter's pâté
The ant gave blueberries
And the city rat, some ortolans
The cicada, finally convinced
Gave the turtle the key to her fields
At his court, the lion gave a big gala
Everyone happy to be alive, we laughed and danced
But men did not get along
That very day the bomb exploded
Fire, iron
Smoke in the air
And my story ends there.
