Le carnaval finissait, les gars étaient tous à peu près mûrs
Grand calme dans le cabaret sauf le trou qu'on perçait dans le mur
Le couvre feu avait sonné depuis déjà une heure
Ceux qui avaient un brin de cervelle étaient partis ailleurs
Lui, il se tenait sur la porte, beau comme le valet de cœur

En souriant dans le miroir, il traversa et dit "c'est ma tournée"
Chacun leva la tête pour voir puis continua de faire ce qu'il faisait
Il s'approcha d'un étranger et dit "n'ayez pas peur
Je voulais juste savoir, le show commence à quelle heure"
Puis il retourna à son poste fier comme le valet de cœur

En coulisse, un poker tournait à cinq joueurs près de l'escalier
Lyly qui avait deux reines attendait la troisième pour parler
Dehors la ville s'éveillait, on sentait la moiteur
Du petit jour qui montait mais là, à l'intérieur
Lyly demanda une carte et elle tomba sur le valet de cœur

Big Jim n'est pas n'importe qui, il a ses propres mines de diamant
Il entre là comme un dandy, sûr de lui, distingué, élégant
Garde du corps, canne en argent, les cheveux bien en place
Tout ce qu'il désire il le prend et le reste il le casse
Mais les gardes et la canne ne sont rien face au valet de cœur

Rosemary revient de la ville, elle descend d'un taxi noir et jaune
Par une porte dérobée, elle entre comme une reine sans couronne
Dans un battement de faux-cils elle lui chuchota
"Pardon chéri d'être en retard" mais Jim n'écoutait pas
Le regard perdu, soudain fixé sur le valet de cœur

J'ai vu ce gars-là quelque part, pensait Big Jim, mais où je n'en sais rien
Peut-être en bas vers le Mexique, ai-je vu son portrait chez quelqu'un
Mais la foule s'impatientait, on baissa les lumières
Et dans l'obscurité, il resta les deux adversaires
Et chacun d'eux désirait Lyly et son valet de cœur

Le juge était à peine entré que chacun voulut l'inviter à boire
On perçait toujours dans le mur, mais personne ne trouvait ça bizarre
Tout le monde parle de la bague que Lyly porte au doigt
C'est un cadeau de Jim, dessus il a gravé un roi
Mais elle, plus que d'un roi, elle rêve d'un valet de cœur

Rosemary s'est mise à boire sec quand elle a vu comment les choses tournaient
Big Jim est un drôle de mec qui l'avait souvent mal considérée
Elle non plus n'a pas été une épouse parfaite
Elle venait de jurer qu'elle redeviendrait honnête
Et voilà soudain qu'elle tombe dingue de ce valet de cœur

Après, tout s'est passé très vite et personne n'a vraiment su comment
La porte de la loge, le revolver, tout a claqué en même temps
Big Jim rangeait son arme et répétait "sortons d'ici"
Même s'il serrait un peu fort le bras de Rosemary
Elle, elle pleurait, penchée sur le corps du valet de cœur

À peine deux portes plus loin, les gars finissaient de percer le mur
Vider le coffre de la banque, emporter le magot dans la voiture
Après ils étaient pile à l'heure au rendez-vous prévu
Mais leur complice, le guetteur, n'est jamais venu
Il tournait inquiet, nerveux, perdu sans le valet de cœur

Le lendemain, jour de potence, les nuages étaient d'un gris profond
Big Jim aussi gisait sous une bâche, une tache rouge en plein front
Rosemary sur le gibet ne regrettait même pas
Le juge qui avait dessaoulé la regardait d'en bas
Et si quelqu'un manquait c'était le valet de cœur

Sur les murs du cabaret vide, le juge a marqué "fermé pour travaux"
Lyly a traversé la rue, elle bosse pour un autre gigolo
Elle pense à son père qu'elle ne voit pas souvent
Elle pense à Rosemary et elle pense au jugement
Mais, plus que tout, elle pense au valet de cœur

The carnival was ending, the guys were all pretty much ripe
Great calm in the cabaret except for the hole we were drilling in the wall
The curfew had rung for an hour already
Those who had a shred of brains had gone elsewhere
He stood at the door, handsome as the Jack of Hearts

Smiling in the mirror, he crossed and said "it's my round"
Everyone looked up to see then continued doing what they were doing
He approached a stranger and said "don't be afraid"
I just wanted to know, what time does the show start"
Then he returned to his post, proud as the Jack of Hearts

Backstage, a poker game was going on with five players near the stairs
Lyly who had two queens was waiting for the third to speak
Outside the city was waking up, you could feel the humidity
Of the early morning rising but there, inside
Lyly asked for a card and it fell on the Jack of Hearts

Big Jim is not just anybody, he has his own diamond mines
He enters there like a dandy, sure of himself, distinguished, elegant
Bodyguards, silver cane, hair well in place
Everything he desires he takes and the rest he breaks
But the guards and the cane are nothing compared to the Jack of Hearts

Rosemary comes back from town, she gets out of a black and yellow cab
Through a hidden door, she enters like a queen without a crown
In a blink of false eyelashes she whispered to him
"Sorry darling for being late" but Jim wasn't listening
His gaze lost, suddenly fixed on the Jack of Hearts

I've seen this guy somewhere, thought Big Jim, but where I don't know
Maybe down in Mexico, have I seen his portrait at someone's place
But the crowd was getting impatient, the lights were dimmed
And in the darkness, the two adversaries remained
And each of them desired Lyly and her Jack of Hearts

The judge had barely entered when everyone wanted to buy him a drink
They were still drilling in the wall, but nobody found it strange
Everyone's talking about the ring Lyly wears on her finger
It's a gift from Jim, he engraved a king on it
But she, more than a king, dreams of a Jack of Hearts

Rosemary started drinking hard when she saw how things were turning out
Big Jim is a funny guy who had often mistreated her
She hadn't been a perfect wife either
She had just sworn she would become honest again
And suddenly she falls madly in love with this Jack of Hearts

Afterward, everything happened very quickly and nobody really knew how
The door of the dressing room, the revolver, everything slammed at the same time
Big Jim was putting away his gun and repeating "let's get out of here"
Even if he was squeezing Rosemary's arm a little too tightly
She was crying, leaning over the body of the Jack of Hearts

Barely two doors away, the guys were finishing drilling the wall
Emptying the bank's safe, taking the loot away in the car
Afterward they were right on time at the planned meeting place
But their accomplice, the lookout, never came
He was turning around worried, nervous, lost without the Jack of Hearts

The next day, hanging day, the clouds were a deep gray
Big Jim also lay under a tarp, a red stain right on his forehead
Rosemary on the gallows didn't even regret it
The judge who had sobered up looked at her from below
And if anyone was missing, it was the Jack of Hearts

On the walls of the empty cabaret, the judge wrote "closed for renovations"
Lyly crossed the street, she's working for another gigolo
She thinks of her father whom she doesn't see often
She thinks of Rosemary and she thinks of the judgment
But, more than anything, she thinks of the Jack of Hearts
