Beobachtung

Der Chef gab mir vertraulich die Adresse
Ich solle mich gleich an die Arbeit machen
Es sei des Staates höchstes Interesse
Den Mann dort Tag und Nacht zu überwachen
Ich folgte diesem Mann auf allen Wegen
Ich stand vier Nächte lang vor seinem Haus –
Verlor ihn selbst beim Pimpern
Nicht einmal aus den Wimpern
Und dabei was seltsames heraus:

Er beobachtet mich
Ganz genau wie ich ihn
Wo ich bin ist auch er
Geh' ich grad, steht er quer
Und blickt wachsam zu mir hin
Erst verfolge ich ihn
Und dann geh' ich ein Stück voran –
Bis man zwischen uns keinen Unterschied merken kann

Ein Wissenschaftler, dem ich dieses sagte
Erzählte mir darauf bei ein paar Bieren:
"Der Virus den ich kürzlich erst erjagte
Der benimmt sich auch nicht so wie and're Viren
Ich hab' ihn unter meinem Mikroskope
Mit Müh' und Sorgfalt endlich isoliert
Und hab' zu meinem Schrecken
Statt Neues zu entdecken
Bei diesem Virus deutlich konstatiert:

Er beobachtet mich
Ganz genau wie ich ihn
Schau ich durch, schaut er fort
Schau ich fort, ist er dort
Und blickt wachsam zu mir hin
Er ist sehr int'ressant
Und doch was fang' ich mit ihm an –
Wenn man zwischen uns keinen Unterschied merken kann?"

Ich glaub' wo immer Menschen sich bewegen
Entdecken wir die gleichen Komponenten
Bei Liebessachen, sowie bei Kollegen
Bei Mitarbeitern wie bei Konkurrenten –
Wir halten uns für praktisch und vernünftig
Für ehrlich und vor allem objektiv
Doch weil ja etwas schief ist
Wenn jeder objektiv ist
Bleibt zuverlässig jeder aggressiv

Sie beobachten mich
Ganz genau wie ich sie
Und sie denken sich still:
"Er singt nicht, was ich will
Und zur falschen Melodie!"
Alle Schuldigen schau'n
Alle Unschuldigen an –
Bis man zwischen beiden keinen Unterschied merken kann

Observation

The boss gave me an address confidentially
He said I should get to work right away
He said it was of the utmost importance to the state
To keep a day and night watch on this man
I followed this man on all his travels
I spent four nights in front of his house –
I didn't lose sight of him even when I was taking a leak
Not even for a single blink
And in doing so, I discovered something strange:

He's watching me
Just as closely as I'm watching him
Wherever I go, so does he
If I walk in a straight line, he crosses my path
And stares at me with caution
First I follow him
And then I walk a little ways ahead of him –
Until it's impossible to tell the difference between us

I told a scientist about this
And after a few beers, he told me:
"The virus that I cornered recently
Doesn't behave like other viruses
I have it under my microscope
With great effort and care, I finally isolated it
And to my horror,
Instead of discovering something new
I clearly saw this virus:

Watching me
Just as closely as I'm watching it
If I look through it, it looks away
If I look away, it's right there
And staring at me with caution
It's very interesting
But what am I to do with it -
If it's impossible to tell the difference between us?"

I believe that wherever people interact
We discover the same elements
In love affairs, as well as with colleagues
With employees as with rivals –
We consider ourselves to be practical and reasonable
Honest and, above all, objective
But because something is wrong
If everyone is objective
Everyone remains reliably aggressive

They're watching me
Just as closely as I'm watching them
And they think to themselves:
"He's not singing what I want
And to the wrong melody!"
All the guilty ones look
At all the innocent ones –
Until it's impossible to tell the difference between them
