Das Beste ist, ich weiß nicht, ob ich tot bin
Das Leben scheint mir jedenfalls sehr lange her

Ich bin allein und habe kein Gewicht

Die Welt ist weit, viel weiter, als ich geh'n kann
Der Himmel nah und außerdem besonders blau
Ich glaube kaum, dass irgendwas gescheh'n kann –
Was schon geschah, war auch nicht sehr genau
Ich war ein Gast und hatte keine Gäste
Und was ich sprach, war niemals ein Gedicht
Drum, wie gesagt, ist es gewiss das Beste

Es gibt ein Mädchen bei den grünen Bäumen
Die seh' ich jeden Tag an mir vorübergeh'n
Wenn ich ihr folgte, müsst' ich mich verträumen
Und würde plötzlich vor mir selber steh'n
Dann säh' ich mich mit arg befleckter Weste
Stünd voller Schuld vor'm eigenen Gericht
Ich säh' den Schmutz in meinem eignen Neste
Den bösen Blick im eigenen Gesicht –
Das darf nicht sein und drum ist es das Beste

The best thing is, I don't know if I'm dead
Life feels like a long time ago anyway
I think I'm in some kind of boat
And if I steer it, everyone laughs a lot
Dreamy beautiful parties are on the horizon
I'm alone and I have no weight
And as I said, I find it's the best thing
That I don't know if I'm already dead or not

The world is wide, much wider than I can walk
The sky's close and also especially blue
I hardly think that anything can happen –
What has happened was not very accurate either
I was a guest and had no guests
And what I said was never a poem
Therefore, as I said, it is certainly the best thing

There's a girl by the green trees
I see her pass me every day
If I followed her, I'd have to dream away
And would suddenly be standing before myself
Then I'd see myself with a very stained waistcoat
Would stand full of guilt before my own court
I'd see the dirt in my own nest
The evil look on my own face –
That mustn't be and that's why it's the best thing
That I don't know if I'm already dead or not
