Wenn es regnet, spielt im Pavillon
Ein vergrämtes altes Grammophon
Niemand stellte es seit Jahren ein
Doch wenn es regnet, spielt es von allein

Spielt das Grammophon ein Liebeslied
Und als meine Tante mich besuchen kam
Ertönte "Glühwürmchen, Glühwürmchen, flimmre"
Bis sie Abschied nahm

One-step, Two-step, Shimmy spielt es fabelhaft
Alte Operettenmelodien
Wenn es blitzt und donnert, spielt es leidenschaftlich gern
"Grüß mir die schönen Frau'n im alten Wien!"

Immer lauter wird das Grammophon
In der Stube hör' ich jeden Ton
Mit den Regentropfen auf dem Dach
Spielt es im Takt die C-Moll-Suite von Bach

Langsam kommt das Grammophon in Schwung
Und man hört die Götterdämmerung
Dann kommt Mozart, dann der Marsch "Auf in die Schlacht!"
Und selbst die Leute in den Regenpfützen stehn sofort "Habt Acht"

Dann kommt Charleston, dann ein Zapfenstreich
Und die Nadel kratzt die Platten weich
Dann kommt Lohengrins Schwanengesang
Und dann kommt "Robes, Modes, für die Fenster Stores"
Jeder alte Schlager stundenlang!

Wenn der Regen langsam leiser wird
Und der Donner rar und heiser wird
Und der Wind kommt nur inkognito
Spielt das Grammophon pianissimo

Wenn ich dann in meinen Garten geh'
Und ein bisschen nach dem Rechten seh'
Und den Pavillon betreten will
Dann ist das Grammophon – auf einmal still

The Gramophone

When it rains, an old gramophone plays
in the pavilion, sad and alone
No one has wound it up for years
But when it rains, it plays all by itself

When a couple in love strolls by
The gramophone plays a love song
And when my aunt came to visit me
It sang "Glowworm, glowworm, glimmer"
Until she went away

It plays One-step, Two-step, Shimmy, so wonderfully
Old operetta melodies
When there's lightning and thunder, it plays with great passion
"Greet the beautiful women of old Vienna!"

The gramophone keeps getting louder
And I can hear every note in my room
With the raindrops on the roof
It plays Bach's C minor suite in time

Slowly, the gramophone gains momentum
And you can hear Götterdämmerung
Then comes Mozart, then the march "Off to battle!"
And even the people in the puddles stand up at attention

Then comes Charleston, then a bugle call
And the needle scratches the records
Then comes Lohengrin's swan song
And then comes "Robes, Modes, for the window stores"
Every old hit, for hours!

When the rain slowly gets softer
And the thunder becomes rare and hoarse
And the wind comes only incognito
The gramophone plays pianissimo

When I go into my garden
And check if everything's alright
And want to enter the pavilion
The gramophone is suddenly – silent
