Man schwelgt in Nostalgie daran, zum Jubel des Parketts

"Nein, nein, zu verwöhnt sind die Leute,"
Sagt ein Anderer, "das ist die Gefahr!"
Doch ich sag' Ihnen im Vertrauen
Auf meine Worte können Sie bauen:
Das ist alles nicht wahr, das ist alles nicht wahr!

Das Kabarett ist nicht tot, es bleibt am Leben
Es hat noch nie so viel Kabarett gegeben
Und weit entfernt von Liquidierung
Kriegt's für jede Inszenierung
Von der dankbaren Regierung

Ich bin doch auch Kabarettist, Sie selber seh'n es
Ich kabarettiere gegen dieses oder jenes
Denn erst im Kabarett bemerkt es jedes Kind
Wie demokratisch unsere Volksvertreter sind

Ich bin stets gegen die Kirche, das ist heut' beinah schon Pflicht
Gegen den Kapitalismus, weil das glaubt man mir ja nicht
Baader-Meinhof tu' ich garnicht kommentieren
Denn wer weiß, für die könnt jemand applaudieren
Ich bin gegen die Amerikaner, aber nicht mit zu viel Wut
Weil seit Vietnam vorbei ist, gibt's da Zweifel
Ich bin gegen jede Gewalt
Nur die Staatsgewalt ist gut
Denn auch ich hab' eine Villa in der Eifel

Kurz und gut, ich habe ganz genau bedacht
Dass nicht tot sein kann, was Propaganda macht
Das Kabarett ist nicht tot, auch nicht im Osten
Kabarettist ist heut' ein ziemlich sicherer Posten
Man ist nicht rechts, man ist nicht links, man ist modern
Man ist Vermittler
Wie schon bei Hitler
Man kann auch sagen: Ein Kabarettist, das ist ein Mann
Auf den ein Demokrat nie böse werden kann

Ich war als Kabarettist
Zuerst ein Idealist
Und strebte nach den allerhöchsten Zielen
Doch die Zeitungen schrieben kein Wort
Und das Publikum blieb fort
Weil niemand wusste, wo und wann wir spielen
Was macht man ohne Geld?
Erst schimpft man auf die Welt
Doch die Welt schießt auch auf Spatzen mit Kanonen
Und dann sagt man etwas schlapp:
"Nun, ich brech' den Kampf nicht ab
Ich mach' nur ein paar kleine Konzessionen!"

Anfangs macht man Konzessionen
Um zu essen und zu wohnen
Später macht man Konzessionen
An Personen, die sich lohnen
Bis man eines Tages einzuseh#n beginnt
Dass die meisten Konzessionen keine mehr sind
Denn man teilt die Meinung derer
Die es leichter haben statt schwerer
Und das Publikum will lachen
Und man kauft sich schöne Sachen
Und auf einmal kommt dann so ein Idiot
Der behauptet, unser Kabarett sei tot
Das Kabarett ist weder tot noch in Gefahr!
Das ist alles nicht wahr, ist alles nicht wahr, ist alles nicht wahr!

Das Kabarett ist nicht tot, solang' der Staat lebt
Das Kabarett ist nicht tot, solang' ein Soldat lebt
Ich lasse mich samt meinen Witzen
Von Soldaten mit Haubitzen
Vor euch Weltverbesserern schützen
Mit Gewalt
Das Kabarett weicht nicht zurück vor Terroristen
Ich fordere Freiheit für loyale Kabarettisten!
Hier ist man geistreich, das ist nichts für'n kleinen Mann
Der sich die Eintrittspreise gar nicht leisten kann

Ich bin nie gegen Israel, weil das ist jetzt nicht modern
Ich bin für Pornographie, weil das hör'n die Leute gern'
Was die Abtreibung betrifft, die macht mir Kummer
Die taugt bestenfalls für eine ernste Nummer
Ich bin stets für die Frauen, für die Emanzipation
Aber immer mit Humor, nie gejammert
Über die Bild-Zeitung wir hier gelacht - da kenn ich kein Pardon!
Und der Bundespräsident wird ausgeklammert
Und das Publikum geht hochbeglückt nach Haus
Alle loben mich - sogar Franz Josef Strauß

Das Kabarett wird noch lange funktionieren
Und auch im Fernseh'n muss man's kaum noch zensurieren
Denn der moderne Kabarettist hat eins erfaßt:
Bleibe sympathisch, dann bist du demokratisch!
Das Kabarett ist alles andere als tot
Auch ich bleib' mutiger Kabarettist - und Patriot!

Cabaret is Not Dead

You hear so much these days about the death of cabaret
You revel in nostalgia about it, to the cheers of the stalls
"Television killed it,"
Someone says, "that much is clear!"
"No, no, people are too spoiled,"
Another says, "that's the danger!"
But I tell you in confidence
You can rely on my words:
That's all not true, that's all not true!

Cabaret is not dead, it remains alive
There has never been so much cabaret
And far from being liquidated
It gets for every production
From the grateful government
Subsidies
I'm a cabaret artist too, you see it yourself, my dear
I do cabaret against this or that
Because only in cabaret does every child notice
How democratic our people's representatives are

I'm always against the church, that's almost obligatory these days
Against capitalism, because, you wouldn't believe me
I won't comment on Baader-Meinhof at all
Because who knows, someone might applaud them
I'm against the Americans, but not with too much anger
Because since Vietnam is over, there are doubts
I'm against all violence
Only state violence is good
Because I too have a villa in the Eifel

Cabaret is not dead, not even in the East
Being a cabaret artist today is a pretty safe job

Because you share the opinion of those
Who have it easier instead of harder
And the audience wants to laugh
And you buy yourself nice things
And suddenly some idiot comes along
Who claims that our cabaret is dead
Cabaret is neither dead nor in danger!

Cabaret is not dead as long as the state lives
Cabaret is not dead as long as a soldier lives
I let myself, including my jokes
Be protected by soldiers with howitzers
From you do-gooders
With force
Cabaret does not retreat from terrorists
I demand freedom for loyal cabaret artists!
Here you are witty, that's nothing for the little guy
Who can't afford the entrance fees

I'm never against Israel, because that's not fashionable now
I'm for pornography because that's what people like to hear
As for abortion, it worries me
That's only good for a serious number at best
I'm always for women, for emancipation
But always with humor, never whining
About the Bild newspaper we laughed here - I know no mercy there!
And the Federal President is being defused
And the audience goes home delighted
Everyone praises me - even Franz Josef Strauss

Cabaret will continue to function for a long time to come
And even on television it hardly needs to be censored anymore
Because the modern cabaret artist has grasped one thing:
Stay likable, then you're democratic!
Cabaret is anything but dead
I too remain a courageous cabaret artist - and a patriot!
