Drieben beim Herrn Wachtel
Steht a große Schachtel

Eine Birne kann man essen
Einen Knopf, den kann man nähn
Von an Bluntschli hat man gar nix
Drum kann ichs nicht verstehn

Und wie ich näher hinschau
Was glaubns, was ich entdeck?
A blauer Bleistiftspitzer
Liegt hinterm Knopf im Eck
Der Knopf liegt nebn dem Bluntschli
Der Bluntschli nebn der Birn
Das kann ich nicht begreifen
Das geht mir nicht ins Hirn

Bei sowas wird mir schwindlich
Da bin ich empfindlich
Das ist mir unergrindlich
Das wird noch a Schkandal
A Bluntschli ist gefährlich
Beschwerlich, entbehrlich
Drum ists mir unerklärlich
Der Wachtel ist nicht normal

A Bluntschli und a Spitzer
Und a Knopf und eine Birn
Wozu braucht er den Bluntschli
Das werd ich nie kapiern

Ich sitz grad im Gasthaus
Bei an Glas Wein und rast aus
Pletzlich schau ich auf und seh
Den Wachtel vor der Tier
Gschwind ruf ich: "Herr Wachtel
Trinkens auch a Achtel
Ich werds zahln und sie erklärn
Den Bluntschli mir dafür"
Der Wachtel sagt: "Sehr gern
Ich werd Ihnen erklärn

In der Schachtel liegt a Bluntschli
Das wissen Sie genau
A Knopf, a Birn, a Spitzer
Der letztere ist blau
Sehns, diesen Spitzer nehm ich
Und ich steck ihn mir ins Ohr
Dann nehm ich noch den Knopf zur Hand
Und halt ihn hoch empor

Und jetzt mit meiner Linken
Ergreife ich die Birn
Mit Stengel schen nach unten
Halt ich sie an die Stirn
Na, jetzt sind meine Händ voll
Jetzt werden Sie verstehn
Wenn ich jetzt noch die Augen schließ
Kann ich'n Bluntschli garnich sehn

Na, das ist doch verständlich
Ob weiblich, ob männlich
Der Bluntschli hat nun endlich
An tiefsinnigen Zweck
Der Spitzer gibt a Ruh
Und der Knopf sagt nicht Muh
Und die Augen, die sind zu
Und der Bluntschli ist weg

Deswegn brauch ich den Spitzer
Die Birne und den Knopf
Und werf sie mit dem Bluntschli
Zusamm in einen Topf

Drauf sag ich: "Herr Wachtel
Trinkens noch a Achtel
Trinken Sie es langsam
Doch erklären Sie mir schnell
Ich begreif die Birne
Selbst an Ihrer Stirne
Auch der Spitzer und der Knopf
Sind ganz konventionell
Der Bluntschli is der Witz
Was glaubns, weshalb ich schwitz"'

Schaun Sie: In der Schachtel liegt a Bluntschli

Soviel geht mir in' Kopf
Ich frag Sie wegn dem Bluntschli
Dieser Bluntschli ist a Qual

Darauf sagt der Herr Wachtel
"Na, was sagn Sie das nicht gleich?
Der Bluntschli ist das wichtigste
Der Bluntschli macht mich reich

Denn wenn ich nicht den Bluntschli hätt
Wer schauet mich schon an?

Da wär ich der Herr Wachtel
No, der hat eine Schachtel
Und trinkt a mal a Achtel
Ansonsten ist er fad
Mitm Bluntschli in der Schachtel
Bin ich der, Herr Wachtel
Und trinke ich ein Achtel
No dann ist es eine Gnad

Ja friher war das anders
Ka Mensch hat mich gekannt
Aber jetzt hab ich an Bluntschli
Drum bin ich interessant

Der eine sagts dem andern
Es redt sich um-at-um

Und Sie fragn mich, warum?

The Bluntschli

Over at Mr. Wachtel's place
There's a big ol' box
And I'm so curious,
What could be inside?
One day he leaves,
Doesn't come back till later,
So I say, "Now's the time,"
And sneak right in.
As I grab the box,
I almost faint.

In the box there's a Bluntschli
And a pear and a button.
What that guy needs a Bluntschli for,
Just doesn't make sense.
A pear you can eat,
A button, you can sew on,
But a Bluntschli, that's useless,
So I just don't get it.

And as I look closer,
Guess what I discover?
A blue pencil sharpener
Lying behind the button in the corner.
The button's next to the Bluntschli,
The Bluntschli next to the pear.
I can't comprehend it,
It just boggles my mind.

This stuff makes me dizzy,
I'm sensitive, you see.
It's unfathomable to me,
It'll become a scandal.
A Bluntschli is dangerous,
Cumbersome, dispensable.
That's why it's inexplicable,
Wachtel's not normal.

A Bluntschli and a sharpener,
And a button and a pear.
What he needs that Bluntschli for,
I'll never figure out.

I'm sitting in the tavern,
With a glass of wine, freaking out.
Suddenly I look up and see
Wachtel by the door.
Quickly I call out, "Mr. Wachtel,
Come have a glass with me,
I'll pay, and you explain
This Bluntschli thing to me."
Wachtel says, "With pleasure,
I'll explain it all to you."

In the box there's a Bluntschli,
You know that's true.
A button, a pear, a sharpener,
The latter being blue.
See, I take this sharpener
And stick it in my ear.
Then I take the button in my hand
And hold it high and clear.

And now with my left hand
I grab the pear,
Stem pointing downwards,
I hold it to my forehead.
So, now my hands are full,
Now you'll understand.
If I close my eyes now,
I can't see the Bluntschli at all.

Well, that's understandable,
Whether female or male.
The Bluntschli finally has
A profound purpose.
The sharpener provides peace,
And the button doesn't moo.
And my eyes are closed,
And the Bluntschli is gone.

That's why I need the sharpener,
The pear and the button,
And I throw them with the Bluntschli
All together in a pot.

Then I say, "Mr. Wachtel,
Let's have another glass.
Drink it slowly,
But please explain to me quick,
I get the pear,
Even on your forehead.
The sharpener and the button too,
Are quite conventional.
The Bluntschli is the joke,
Why do you think I'm sweating?"

Look: in the box there's a Bluntschli,
And a pear and a button.
And a blue pencil sharpener,
That much makes sense to me.
I'm asking you about the Bluntschli,
This Bluntschli is a pain.
All the other things
Are useful and don't matter.

Then Mr. Wachtel says,
"Well, why didn't you say so right away?
The Bluntschli is the most important thing,
The Bluntschli makes me rich.
Yes, without this Bluntschli
I'd be a different man.
Because if I didn't have the Bluntschli,
Who would even look at me?

Then I'd be Mr. Wachtel,
Well, he has a box
And sometimes drinks a glass of wine,
