Der Vater ist Vertreter und a ehrenwerter Mann
Die Mutter eine Dame wie man selten finden kann
Der Sohn hätt' drum nach Wissen und Gewissen
Ein anständiges Jingel werden missen
Doch Gottes Wege sind einmal verworren und diskret
Obwohl der Sohn studierte auf der Universität
Hat er – wer hätte damals das gedacht? –
Den Eltern nichts wie Schimpf und Schande eingebracht
Sie schleichen durch die Stadt und schauen niemand ins Gesicht
Der missgeratne Sohn ist nämlich – wissen Sie's noch nicht?

Der arme Mensch ist General
Es ist wahrhaftig ein Skandal
Er hätte wirklich – und dafür wird er noch brennen –
Auf seine Mutter etwas Rücksicht nehmen kennen!
Er geht umher und tut sich groß
Mit einem Streifen auf der Hos'!
Die Mutter weint die Augen blind
Er spielt Soldat, als wär er noch a kleines Kind
Macht Leuten Angst und schlägt Krawall –
Damit man merken soll er is a General

Sie haben noch drei Techter und die machen ihnen Ehr'
Die erste ist verheiratet, ich glaub, mit an Chauffeur
Die zweite ist sogar mit einem Doktor –
Der wird sie einmal heiraten – so sogt er
Die dritte ist noch ledig und sie lässt sich etwas Zeit
Man sagt, sie wird es schwer haben, weil sie kennt zu viele Leut
Doch muss man dabei einräumen dem Kind
Dass es zumindest bei der Sache gut verdient
Und nur der eine Sohn hat sich so fürchterlich verirrt
Für ihn ist es nur wichtig, dass man schön im Takt marschiert –
Links-zwo-drei-vier-fünef, links-zwo-drei-vier-fünef ..

No ja, er ist ein General
Da ist der Schaden schon total
Er näht sich Borten an den Rock und kleine Sterne
Und wenn die andern salutiern, das hat er gerne
Er schläft des Nachts in einem Zelt
Und wenn er träumt, ist er an Held –
Dann wacht er auf und kriegt an Zorn
Statt einem Wecker kommt an Goj mit einem Horn!
Na sag'n Sie selbst, ist das normal?
Aus dem wird nie etwas, der bleibt a General!

The General

The father is a salesman and a man of honor
The mother is a lady who is rarely found
The son would have therefore, according to knowledge and conscience
Missed out on becoming a decent boy
But God's ways are sometimes confusing and discreet
Although the son studied at the university
He - who would have thought that back then? -
Only brought shame and disgrace to his parents
They slink through the city and don't look anyone in the face
The degenerate son is, you know? -

The poor man is a general
It's really a scandal
He really should have - and he'll burn for it -
Show some consideration for his mother!
He walks around and acts big
With a stripe on his pants!
The mother cries her eyes blind
He plays soldier like he's still a little boy
Scares people and makes a fuss -
So that everyone will notice he's a general

They still have three daughters and they make them proud
The first one is married, I think to a chauffeur
The second one is even with a doctor -
He'll marry her one day - or so he says
The third one is still single and she's taking her time
They say she'll have a hard time because she knows too many people
But one has to admit to the child
That she at least makes good money from it
And only the one son has gotten so terribly lost
For him, the only important thing is that everyone marches in time -
Left-two-three-four-five, left-two-three-four-five...

Well, he's a general
The damage is already done
He sews braids and little stars onto his jacket
And when the others salute, he likes that
He sleeps in a tent at night
And when he dreams, he's a hero -
Then he wakes up and gets angry
Instead of an alarm clock, a guy comes with a horn!
Well, tell me, is that normal?
He'll never amount to anything, he'll remain a general!
