Wie ich neulich auf der Straße wandel
Treff ich meinen Vetter Eugen Mandel
Und er sagt: "Großer Gott, wie gut, dass man sich trefft!
Weißt du was? Wir machen uns zusammen a Geschäft!
Drüben in dem Laden an der Ecke
Werden wir verkaufen alte Röcke
Mit an Schild daran:
"Alles für den Mann" –
Schon am nächsten Morgen fang'mer an!"

Ich hab gleich die War bestellt –
Ich hab zwar gar ka Geld
Aber was macht das schon?
Zahlt der Kompagnon!
Ich nehm Hosen, Rock und Schuh
Mantel, Hemden auch dazu –
Rechnung für die Transaktion
Kriegt der Kompagnon!
Doch man muss die Arbeit schön halbieren
Ich werd übernehmen das Kassieren!
Leider kommt den ganzen Tag
Niemand, der was kaufen mag
Also was ist die Lektion?
Nimm ka Kompagnon!

Nächsten Tag sag ich zum Vetter Mandel:
"Mandel, du verstehst doch was von Handel!
Wir sind jetzt zwei Tag schon da, und kaufen tut ka Hund
Und ich glaub, die Höhe unsrer Preise ist der Grund!"
Mandel sah mich traurig an, dann rief er:
"Setzen wir die Preise etwas tiefer –
Dass der Kunde weiß
Hier sind tiefe Preis!
Und auf die Art bricht ma scho das Eis!"
(Oi weh!)

Das Geschäft ist a Verlust –
Das hab ich gleich gewusst
Also hab ich nix davon
Nur der Kompagnon!
Doch wenn ich mir selbst was kauf
Dann zahl ich nicht darauf
Sondern krieg noch Provision
Von mein' Kompagnon!
Also mach ich auf zwei Filialen
Selbstverständlich ohne gleich zu zahlen!
Weil ich jetzt beschäftigt bin
Nehm ich a Verkäuferin
Und mach die, mir zum Lohn
Zu mein' Kompagnon!

Aber solche waghalsige Sachen
Kann man auf die Dauer doch nicht machen
Weil sogar dem besten Unternehmer nie was glickt
Wenn er Ware billiger verkauft, als er sie kriegt!
Täglich wurden die Gläubiger erpichter –
Eines Tags erschien bei mir a Richter
Und zu meinem Schreck
Nahm er mir ganz keck
Alles, was nicht mir gehörte, weg!

Nu, wer war plötzlich gar nicht da
Sondern in Amerika
Irgendwo in Oregon?
Nur mein Kompagnon!
Er schrieb einen Brief an mich:
"Hab nur Mut, ich denk an dich!
Ich mach hier in Konfektion
Gruß, dein Kompagnon!"
Und meine Verkäuferin ganz munter
Schreibt sogar: "Ich liebe dich!" darunter!

Aber mittlerweile schon
Mach ich selbst in Konfektion
Und der Richter in Person
Ist mein Kompagnon!

The Partner

As I am walking down the street
I meet my cousin, Eugen Mandel
And he says, "Great heavens, how wonderful that we met!
Do you know what? We should start a business together!
Over there in the shop on the corner
We'll sell old coats
With a sign on it:
"Everything for the man" –
We'll start first thing tomorrow morning!"

I've ordered the goods straight away –
Although I don't have any money
But what does that matter?
The partner is paying!
I'll take trousers, skirts and shoes
Coats, shirts too –
The bill for the transaction
The partner is getting!
But we must divide the work fairly
I'll take over the cash register!
Unfortunately, nobody comes all day
Who wants to buy anything
So what's the lesson?
Don't take a partner!

The next day I say to my cousin Mandel:
"Mandel, you understand about business!
We've been here for two days now, and not a dog is buying
And I think the level of our prices is the reason!"
Mandel looked at me sadly and then he exclaimed:
"Let's make the prices a little lower –
So that the customer knows
Here are low prices!
And that way we'll break the ice!"
(Oh dear!)

The business is a loss –
I knew that straight away
So I get nothing from it
Only the partner!
But when I buy something for myself
Then I don't pay for it
But still get commission
From my partner!
So I'll open two branches
Without paying straight away, of course!
Because I'm busy now
I'll get a saleswoman
And, as a reward for me
Make her my partner!

But such reckless things
Can't be done in the long run
Because even the best entrepreneur never succeeds
If he sells goods more cheaply than he gets them!
Every day the creditors became more insistent –
One day a judge appeared at my door
And to my horror
He boldly took from me
Everything that did not belong to me!

Well, who was suddenly nowhere to be seen
But in America
Somewhere in Oregon?
Only my partner!
He wrote me a letter:
"Just have courage, I'm thinking of you!
I'm making clothes here
Greetings, your partner!"
And my saleswoman, quite cheerfully
Even writes: "I love you!" underneath!

But in the meantime
I'm already making clothes myself
And the judge in person
Is my partner!
