Heute findet jede Zeitung
Größere Verbreitung durch Musikkritiker
Und so hab auch ich die Ehre
Und mach jetzt Karriere als Musikkritiker
Ich hab zwar ka Ahnung, was Musik ist
Denn ich bin beruflich Pharmazeut
Aber ich weiß sehr gut, was Kritik ist
Je schlechter, um so mehr freun sich die Leut

Es gehört zu meinen Pflichten
Schönes zu vernichten als Musikkritiker
Sollt ich etwas Schönes finden
Muß ich's unterbinden als Musikkritiker
Mich kann auch kein Künstler überlisten
Da ich ja nicht verstehe, was er tut
Drum sag ich von jedem Komponisten
Erst nachdem er tot ist, ist er gut

Ja, endlich hab ich einen Posten
Und die Zeitung läßt es sich was kosten
Ich sitzt auf dem ersten Platze
Und die Sänger sehen meine Fratze
Orff und Eck und Boris Blacher
Fürchten meine hohnerfüllten Lacher
Hindemith, Strawinsky und Varese sind zwar gut
Doch ich bin bese

Ja, ich könnt zufrieden sein
Das Schicksal hat mich reich beschert
Aber oh, mich belastet nur eine Verrücktheit
Ich merk es in jedem Konzert
Ich seh, wie das Publikum weich wird wie Wachs
Wenn Musik alle Sinne bewegt
Ich seh, wie beim Zuhören manch trutzigem Manne
Ein Tränchen die Brille beschlägt
Nur für mich hat das Zuhören keinen Sinn
Weil ich unmusikalisch bin

Ich seh, wie ein liebliches Mädchen
Die Hand Ihres Jünglings ergreift und sie drückt
Wie ein Großmütterl zitternd die Halskette auzieht
Weil sie sonst vor Rührung erstickt
Nur ich sitz' da und hör nicht einmal hin
Weil ich unmusikalich bin

Zu Weihnachten schenkt man mir immer Platten
Ich brauch Krawatten und neue Schuh
Wo ich auf Besuch bin, spielt man Platten
Ich sitzt im Schatten und hör nicht zu
Aber andre hörn zu und der Zauber der holden Musik
Macht die ganze Welt schwach
Die Bösen wer'n gut und die Kranken gesunden
Besonders bei Mozart und Bach
Nur ich sitz da und kratz mich stur am Kinn
Weil ich unmusikalisch bin

Tja, als Kind hab ich zwar Klavier gelernt und übte brav zu Haus
Doch über gewisse Stücke kam ich nie hinaus
Dann hab ich auch noch Geige gelernt und übte brav und viel
Und dann ist mein Geigenlehrer g'storben und hat mir sein Geld vermacht
Unter der Bedingung, daß ich nie mehr spiel
Aber etwas mußt ich schließlich tun und versuchte es als Autor
Und ein Verleger, zu dem ich kam, flüsterte mir ins Ohr
Schreiben Sie doch ein Buch über Schubert
Schreiben Sie doch ein Buch über Schubert
Also ging ich froh nach Hause, setzte mich nieder und ich schrieb

Schubert war ein Stierer, großer Komponierer
Er hat nie ein Geld gehabt
Also ist er heute der Verlierer
Er schrieb gar viele Töne
Sicher auch wunderschöne
Für mich sind sie leider bestialisch
Denn ich bin ganz unmusikalisch
Ob es jetzt Schubert oder Tschaikowsky
Brahms oder Liszt oder Dnjepropretrowsky
Ob Sinfonie oder Ouvertüre, Rock'n'Roll oder die Walküre
Zauberflöte, Verkaufte Braut
Für mich ist das alles nur laut!

Das Buch war sofort ein Riesenerfolg und es sagten mir viele Herren
Genial, großartig! Sie müssen Kritiker werden!
Ich sagte ja
Und es geschah!
Ich geh in Konzerte und Opern hinein
Und ich hör mir den Unsinn dort an
Den Leuten gefällt's und ich komm zu dem Schluß
An Musik ist vielleicht etwas dran
Nur was dran ist, will mir nicht in den Sinn
Weil ich unmusikalisch bin

Die Orgel erklingt und ein Knabenchor singt
Und der Kontrapunkt tut sich verzerweigen
Die Pauke zersplittert, der Kapellmeister zittert
Und angeblich schluchzen die Geigen
Am Schluß erdröhnt ein donnernder Applaus
Ich bin der einzige unmusikalische Mensch in Haus

Aber heute findet jede Zeitung

Und so hab auch ich die Ehre
Und mach jetzt Karriere als Musikkritiker
Ich hab diesen Posten schlau erbeutet
Und ich hasse nichts so wie Musik
Und daß mir Musik so nichts bedeutet
Zahl ich jetzt den Musikern zurück

Ah - wartet nur, ihr sollt es büßen
Lebet zu den Füßen des Musikkritikers!
Daß die Welt es wisse
Lest die lustigen Verrisse des Musikritikers!
Ich bin konsequent, und ich erkenne kein Talent
Und da ich weiß, daß ich nichts kann
Laß ich auch niemand andern ran!
Und der Redakteur schätzt meine schlechte Meinung sehr
Und schreit das Publikum: "Hurra!"
Das nützt euch nichts, dann ich bin da!
Und eure Kollegen geben immer ihren Segen
Denn jedem Künstler ist es recht
Spricht man von andern Künstlern schlecht!
Nieder mit Musik!

The Music Critic

Today, every newspaper finds
Greater circulation through music critics
And so I too have the honor
And now I'm making a career as a music critic
I have no idea what music is
Because I'm a pharmacist by trade
But I know very well what criticism is
The worse it is, the more people enjoy it

It is among my duties
To destroy beauty as a music critic
Should I find something beautiful
I must suppress it as a music critic
No artist can outsmart me either
Since I don't understand what he's doing
So I say of every composer
Only after he is dead is he good

Yes, I finally have a position
And the newspaper is spending a fortune
I'm sitting in the first seat
And the singers see my mug
Orff and Eck and Boris Blacher
Fear my harmonica-filled laughter
Hindemith, Strawinsky and Varese are good
But I'm the best

Yes, I could be content
Fate has been generous to me
But oh, only one madness burdens me
I notice it at every concert
I see the audience soften like wax
When music moves all senses
I see how while listening, many a defiant man
Has a tear blurring his glasses
Only for me does listening have no meaning
Because I am unmusical

I see how a lovely girl
Takes her young man's hand and squeezes it
Like a granny tremblingly takes off her necklace
Because otherwise she would choke with emotion
Only I sit there and don't even listen
Because I am unmusical

For Christmas I always get records as presents
I need ties and new shoes
Wherever I visit, people play records
I sit in the shadows and don't listen
But others listen and the magic of beautiful music
Makes the whole world weak
The wicked become good and the sick recover
Especially with Mozart and Bach
Only I sit there and stubbornly scratch my chin
Because I am unmusical

Well, as a child I learned to play the piano and practiced diligently at home
But I never got past certain pieces
Then I also learned to play the violin and practiced diligently and a lot
And then my violin teacher died and left me his money
On the condition that I never play again
But I had to do something after all and tried my hand as an author
And a publisher I went to whispered in my ear
Why don't you write a book about Schubert?

So I went home happy, sat down and I wrote

Schubert was an Austrian, a great composer
He never had any money
So today he is the loser
He wrote many tunes
Surely also some beautiful ones
For me, unfortunately, they are atrocious
Because I am completely unmusical
Whether it is Schubert or Tchaikovsky now
Brahms or Liszt or Dnjepropretrovsky
Whether symphony or overture, Rock'n'Roll or the Valkyrie
Magic Flute, Bartered Bride
To me it's all just noise!

The book was an immediate huge success and many gentlemen told me
Brilliant, magnificent! You must become a critic!
I said yes
And so it happened!
I go to concerts and operas
And I listen to the nonsense there
People like it and I come to the conclusion
Maybe there is something to music after all
But what it is, I can't figure out
Because I am unmusical

The organ sounds and a boys' choir sings
And the counterpoint branches out
The timpani shatters, the conductor trembles
And supposedly the violins sob
At the end, thunderous applause erupts
I am the only unmusical person in the house

But today, every newspaper finds
Greater circulation through music critics
And so I too have the honor
And now I'm making a career as a music critic
I craftily seized this position
And I hate nothing more than music
And the fact that music means so little to me
I now repay to the musicians

Ah - just you wait, you'll pay for it
Live at the feet of the music critic!
Let the world know
Read the music critic's hilarious slating!
I am consistent, and I do not recognize talent
And since I know that I cannot do anything
I won't let anyone else do it either!
And the editor appreciates my bad opinion very much
And the audience shouts: "Hurrah!"
That won't do you any good, because I am here!
And your colleagues always give their blessing
Because every artist likes it
When other artists are spoken of badly!
Down with music!
