Und möcht sich gern bewerfen
Und lächelt nur im Traum noch
Und unterm Weihnachtsbaum noch

Man küsst sich nicht und schmiegt sich nicht
Und will sich nicht und kriegt sich nicht
Und lebt sein Leben nur grau in grau
Und träumt sich und träumt sich
Ganz tief in eine andere Frau

Und man sagt auf Schritt und Tritt
"Ich mach das nicht mehr lange mit"

Und doch macht man's noch lange mit
Macht Küsse auf die Wange mit
Und Händedruck und Veilchen

Man streitet nicht, verwundet nicht

Man kauft sich einen Pudel

Man zählt schon keine Träne mehr

Und fragt nicht, wie das Wetter ist
Und frisst, bis man noch fetter ist

Man schuftet und ruiniert sich
Statt zwanzig, raucht man vierzig
Dann spricht man einen Priester
Und wird noch viel vermiester

Dann hört man mit dem Hadern auf
Und schneidet sich die Adern auf
Und hängt sich an einen Lindenbaum
Und träumt sich und träumt sich
Hinaus aus seinem Traum

Genug von der Ehe, jetzt zum Gegenteil: zur Liebe
Liebeslieder sind selten im Kabarett
Und wenn sich das folgende Liebeslied aus dem Jahr 58
Trotzdem so viele Jahre gehalten hat
So ist es vielleicht der Tatsache zuzuschreiben
Dass es nicht einen bestimmten Menschen betrifft
Sondern einen Zustand
Einen Zustand, der sich seit damals nicht geändert hat
Und wahrscheinlich nie ändern wird

You call each other, but you don't get excited
