Die Zweitausend

Ich bin zwar meinem Onkel Herschl Meyer nie begegnet –
Doch trotzdem hat er Donnerstag das Zeitliche gesegnet!
Er war an Millionär, a Hans im Glück in allen Gassen
Und hat von elf Millionen mir zweitausend hinterlassen –
Zweitausend ist viel Geld für mich, zweitausend ist a Sache
Wo ich seit Jahrn im Monat hundertfünfunddreißig mache!
Ich sollte jubeln und mich freun mit'm unverhofften Segen –
Jedoch ich überleg und hör nicht auf zu überlegen:

Wenn ich's anleg, lauern vielerlei Gefahren!
Wenn ich's spare, wird ma sogn: "Wos braucht er sparen?"
Wenn ich's ausgeb, wird ma sogn: "A Verschwender!
Er hat ka Weib, er hat ka Haus
Und gibt es aus!"

Bin ich hungrig und ich kauf'mer was zu Essen
Wird ma sogn: "Er denkt immer nur ans Fressen!"
Wenn mir kalt ist und ich kauf mir einen Mantel
Werden alle sogn: "Was braucht der Schmock
An neuen Rock?"

Und sollte ich mein Rosele zur Gattin jetzt bekommen
Werdn alle sogn: "Ohne Geld hätt sie ihn nie genommen!"
Und mache ich Karriere jetzt und hab ich was erreicht
Werden alle sogn: "Kunststück! Wenn man erbt, dann ist es leicht!"

Kauf ich Aktien, wird'ma sogn: "Er ist bestechlich!"
Mach ich Urlaub, wird'ma sogn: "Er ist gebrechlich!"
Wenn ich's herschenk, wird'ma sogn: "Er is meschugge!"
Und das is wahr, ich arbeit schwer –
Was schenk ich's her?

Geh ich trinken, wird'ma sogn: "So gewehnlich!"
Hab ich Weiber, wird'ma sogn: "Das schaut ihm ähnlich!"
Mach ich gor nichts, wird'ma sognn: "Er is geizig!"
Und kauf ich Bücher und studier –
Wer glaubt das mir?

Und sollte ich ins Ausland gehn, um dort was zu probieren
Dann lässt man an der Grenze mich bestimmt noch arretieren
Man bringt mich zwar ins Dorf zurück, sobald ich es erklär –
Doch alle Leute zeigen auf mich, no und peinlich ist das sehr!

Darum bin ich gestern Abend ausgerissen
Und hab alles in den Fluss hinabgeschmissen
Ohne Zögern, ohne Tränen, ohne Reue!
Es machte platsch und schwamm ums Eck –
Jetzt is es weg!
Vielleicht wird irgend jemand glücklich mit dem Dreck!

The Two Thousand

I have never met my uncle Herschl Meyer –
Yet he passed away this Thursday, no one can deny!
He was a millionaire, a man of luck in every street
And left me two thousand from his eleven million –
Two thousand is a lot of money, it means a lot
When for years I've been making one hundred and thirty-five dollars a month!
I should rejoice and be happy with this unexpected blessing –
Instead, I ponder and can't stop deliberating:

If I invest it, there are many dangers lurking!
If I save it, they'll say: "Why does he need to save?"
If I spend it, they'll say: "A spendthrift!
He has no wife, no house
And spends it out!"

If I'm hungry and buy myself something to eat,
They'll say: "He only ever thinks about eating!"
If I'm cold and buy myself a coat,
Everyone will say: "What does the weirdo
Need a new coat for?"

And should I now marry my Rosele,
They'll all say: "She would never have married him without money!"
And if I make a career now and achieve something,
Everyone will say: "Of course! When you inherit, it's easy!"

If I buy stocks, they'll say: "He's bribable!"
If I take a vacation, they'll say: "He's feeble!"
If I give it away, they'll say: "He's crazy!"
And that's true, I work hard –
Why should I give it away?

If I go out drinking, they'll say: "How common!"
If I have women, they'll say: "Typical of him!"
If I don't do anything at all, they'll say: "He's stingy!"
And if I buy books and study –
Who would believe me?

And if I go abroad to try something there,
Then they'll certainly arrest me at the border.
They'll bring me back to the village when I explain,
But all the people will point at me, which will be very embarrassing!

That's why I ran away yesterday evening
And threw everything into the river,
Without hesitation, without tears, without remorse!
It made a splash and swam around the corner –
Now it's gone!
Perhaps someone will be happy with this junk!
