Kam die Ida vorbei
Und sie sprach: "Du, ich hoff', du bist frei
Komm, geh'n wir in die Meier-"

Fügt' ich bei: "Nun, es sei!"
Und so aßen wir jeder ein Ei

Mein Ei war herrlich und frisch
Doch Idas Ei fiel vom Tisch
Wo es brach
Und sie sprach:
"Bringt ein Ei
Noch herbei
Denn das erste ist ent-"
Zweimal im Mai
Musst' ich kaufen ein Ei
Und sie aß es auch ganz ohne Scheu
Doch sie versprach: "Ich bleib' dir..."
Dreimal im Mai
Musst' ich kaufen ein Ei
Denn für sie war ein Ei Kinderei

Dann wollt' ich zahlen und geh'n
Ida fand das nicht sehr schön
Und sie bat:
"Das wär schad'
Bleiben wir
Doch noch hier
Schau, ich kann doch nichts da-"
Viermal im Mai
Aß die Ida das Ei
Doch beim fünften, da war ich perplex
Bis Ida sprach: "Denk an dein'..."
Sechsmal im Mai
Aß die Ida das Ei
Und sie schien äußerst glücklich dabei

Sieben Eier wurden gebracht
Dann sagte Ida: "Gib acht
Denn ich lieb' dich allein
Ich bin mein
Du bist dein!"
Doch da sagt' ich endlich:
"Neunmal im Mai
Kauf' ich Niemand ein Ei!
Iss doch Salz oder Senf oder Crème!"
Dann schlich ich fort auf leisen
Zehnmal im Mai
Kam ich später vorbei
Und die Ida ist dort noch zu seh'n

Once in May
Ida walked by
And she said: "You, I hope you're free
Come, let's go to the restaurant-"
Once in May
I added: "Well, let it be!"
And so we each ate an egg

My egg was delicious and fresh
But Ida's egg fell off the table
Where it broke
And she said:
"Bring an egg
Over here
For the first one is gone-"
Twice in May
I had to buy an egg
And she ate it too, without any hesitation
But she promised: "I'll stay with you..."
Three times in May
I had to buy an egg
Because for her, an egg was child's play

Then I wanted to pay and go
Ida didn't think that was very nice
And she asked:
"That would be a shame
Let's stay
Just a little while longer
Look, I can't do anything for-"
Four times in May
Ida ate the egg
But by the fifth, I was shocked
Until Ida said: "Think of your..."
Six times in May
Ida ate the egg
And she seemed extremely happy

Seven eggs were brought
Then Ida said: "Pay attention
Because I love you alone
I am mine
You are yours!"
But then I finally said:
"Nine times in May
I won't buy anyone an egg!
Go eat salt or mustard or cream!"
Then I crept away quietly
Ten times in May
I came by later
And Ida is still there
