Wenn man allen nur begreifen könnte
Sich vergreifen könnte und sie kneifen könnte
Ein paar Rücken brechen und versteifen könnte!
Aber alle warten auf das Gleiche –
Wenn man drüber einfach lächeln könnte
Wenn die Luft so wär, dass man sich fächeln könnte
Nicht ersticken müsste, nicht mehr röcheln könnte
Aber alle wollen nur die Leiche!
Jeder weiß, dass man ertrinken könnte
Doch bevor man ganz und gar versinken könnte
Glaub ich fest, dass jeder einmal winken könnte
Oder rufen: "Geh' doch noch nicht fort!
Gibt's denn einen bessern Ort?
Freunde hast du keine dort!" –
Klein ist der Sinn aber groß ist das Wort

Wenn man noch einmal erwachen könnte
Drüber lachen könnte und sich machen könnte
Wie sie alle dich am liebsten hängen würden
Und dich drängen würden: "Geh und stirb!"
Und wenn man dann schließlich sterben würde
Und zerfallen würde und verderben würde
Wie dann jeder freudig sich verfärben würde
Und behaupten würde: "Er war liab!"

The content is small and the consumption is great

If only you could persuade everyone
Not to pull their threads so tightly!

But everyone is waiting for the same thing -

If the air were such that you could fan yourself
Not suffocating, not gagging anymore
But everyone only wants the corpse!
Everyone knows that you could drown
But before you sink completely and utterly
I firmly believe that everyone could wave once
Or call out: "Don't go away yet!
Is there a better place?
You have no friends there!" -
The meaning is small but the word is great

If only you could wake up again
Could laugh about it and get ready
Like they would all love to hang you
And would push you: "Go and die!"
And if you then finally died
And would decay and perish
How everyone would then joyfully discolor
And would claim: "He was lovely!"
