Genau am Fünfundzwanzigsten Dezember
A Jingl ward geborn auf unserm Stern
Drei Könige erschienen, es zu sehen
Und hatten es, sobald sie's sah'n, sehr gern!
Das warn der Mojsche König, a Vertreter
Sein Bruder Jakob, aus der Slowakei
Und dessen Sohn Emmanuel, a Trompeter –
Und ich war selbstverständlich auch dabei!

Die Eltern warn der alte Josef Pollack
Und seine Gattin, a geborne Schmock
Wie alle standen zärtlich um die Wiege
Am Schillerplatz Tir elf, im dritten Stock!

Nun, wir wären dort gestanden viele Wochen
Doch mir war schon nach drei Minuten fad
Drum trat ich vor, und hielt a kleine Rede –
Man kann fast sagn, es war a Referat!
Ich sagte:

"Oij weh, kleines Wickelkind, wos da liegt vor mir in der Wiege
Ich hab Dich was zu fragen, her mich aus:

Für wos t Du gekommen, und machst der Mutter Müh –
Wie stellst Du Dir Dein weitres Leben vor?
Die Welt Wird Dir nicht frommen, Du t doch ka Genie –
Genies gibts hechstens alle hundert Johr!
Du wirst doch werden a schlechter Mensch, genau wie Dein Papa
Wirst sein verfressen und nur auf's Geld bedacht
Wie Deine Frau Mama!
Also für wos t Du gekommen?
Für wos brauchst Du die Welt?
Und wer, Du Untam, hat Dich herbestellt?

Wos wirst Du erreichen?
Du wirst sein a Falott –
Wirst Dich zehn Mal vergleichen
Und wirst machen bankrott!

Du wirst alle bestehlen
Weil Dich jeder betriegt
Und die Leit wern krakeelen
Weil die Leit sind verrickt!

Erst wird man Dich impfen
Dass Du nicht wirst marod
Und dann auf Dich schimpfen
Und Dir winschen den Tod!

Man wird Dich verpriegeln
Schon als winziges Kind
Und dann wird man kriegeln
Dass wir alle so sind!

Also für wos t Du gekommen? Für wos machst Du Station?
Für was soll man den Eltern gratuliern?
Weil Du imstand sein wirst, etwas zu kaufen
Und dann zu verkaufen, für einen Profit?
Oder weil Deine Hände und Fiess sich vergrössern wern –
Aber das Hirn wächst doch nebbich nicht mit?
Oder für was t Du Armer gekommen in unsere Mitte –
Bitte?
Sicherlich bereust Du diesen Schritt!"

Der Vater sprach: "Was brauchst Du ihn vermiesen –
Das arme Kind ist jetzt scho mies genug!"
Die Mutter sprach: "Ich werd Dich nicht mehr griessen –
Und wenn, so hoff ich, dass ich mer verschluck!
Wos brauchst Du meinem Kind wos prophezeien?
Wie weisst Du, was er später einmal ist?
Vielleicht wird er a Anwalt, oder a Doktor –
A Wissenschaftler, oder a Dentist!
Wos sterst Du einer Mutter süße Träume?
Vielleicht hat er als Kinstler a Talent
Auch weise kennt er werdn, wie König Schlojme –
Vielleicht wird er sogar a Präsident
(No, a Vizepräsident)
Er wird vielleicht – wer kann das Heut schon wissen?
A mächtiger und grosser, guter Mann!"

Da hielt ich ihr so gut es ging den Mund zu
Und fing noch einmal selbst zu reden an, und sagte:
"Oij weh, kleines Wickelkind, in der Wiege
Host Du gehert, was Deine Mutter vorgebracht hat?
Da kann man doch nur wiederholen:

Für wos t Du gekommen? Für wos liegst Du jetzt da?
Wer soll Dir diesen Fehler je verzeihn?
Man hat zwar angenommen, vor Allem deine Mama
Du wirst von andere Leit a Ausnahme sein!
Ma glaubt, Du wirst a Doktor sein, a Kinstler, a Jurist
A weiser Mann, wie Salomon – no und? Wenn es so ist
No dann, für wos t Du gekommen? Für wos machst Du Dich breit?
Denn grad, wenn Du wer t, dann tuste mir leid!

Wirst Du sein a Professor
Der erforscht unsre Welt
Wird ma sogn, Du t weltfremd –
Also brauchst Du ka Geld!

Wirst Du werdn a Kinstler
Und der Kunst bleiben treu
Wird ma sogn, ma kauft nix –
Weil, Du t noch zu neu!

No und wirst Du a Weiser
Mit an hohen Ideal
Der den Menschen will helfen –
Oij weh, dann wird's katastrophal!

Denn dann wird ma Dich einsperrn
Und Dich schlogn auf's Haupt
Weil man einem Propheten
Prinzipiell niemals glaubt!

Also für wos t Du gekommen? Für wos dieser Besuch?
Am Fünfundzwanzigsten Zwelften, noch dazu?
Bist Du gekommen, damit Du dasselbe, wie so viele andere Leute erfahrst?
Oder damit Du Dir für Deine Kinder – die leider ja auch kommen – etwas ersparst?
Glaubst Du, die Leute von Heit sind empfänglich für Liebe, für Wohrheit?
Torheit!
Wärst Du doch geblieben, wo Du warst!"

What Did You Come For

On the twenty-fifth of December
A jingle was born on our star
Three kings appeared to see it
And, as soon as they saw it, loved it very much!
These were Moishe the King, a representative
His brother Jacob, from Slovakia
And his son Emmanuel, a trumpeter -
And of course, my dear, I was there too!

The parents were old Josef Pollack
And his wife, née Schmock
Like everyone else, they stood tenderly around the cradle
At Schillerplatz number eleven, on the third floor!

Well, we would have stood there for many weeks
But I was already bored after three minutes
So I stepped forward and gave a little speech -
One could almost say it was a lecture!
I said:

"Oh, dear, little baby, lying there in the cradle before me
I have something to ask you, enlighten me:

What have you come for, and are giving your mother trouble -
How do you imagine your future life?
The world will not be good to you, you're not a genius -
Geniuses only come around every hundred years!
You'll become a bad person, just like your dad
You'll be gluttonous and only care about money
Just like your mom!
So, what have you come for?
Why do you need the world?
And who, you little rascal, ordered you here?

What will you achieve?
You'll be a good-for-nothing -
You'll compare yourself ten times over
And you'll go bankrupt!

You will rob everyone
Because everyone cheats you
And people will squawk
Because people are crazy!

First, they will vaccinate you
So you don't get sick
And then they will scold you
And wish you dead!

They will spank you
Even as a tiny child
And then they will fight
That we are all like that!

So, what have you come for? What are you stopping here for?
Why should anyone congratulate your parents?
Because you'll be able to buy something
And then sell it for a profit?
Or because your hands and feet will grow -
But your brain won't grow with them?
Or why have you, poor thing, come into our midst -

The father said: "Why do you have to spoil it for him -
The poor child is already miserable enough!"
The mother said: "I won't greet you anymore -
And if I do, I hope I choke!
Why do you have to prophesy to my child?
How do you know what he will be later?
Maybe he'll be a lawyer, or a doctor -
A scientist, or a dentist!
Why do you kill a mother's sweet dreams?
Maybe he has a talent as an artist
