Ich werd' schreiben, dass der Kissinger Sport treibt
Dass es Jackie mit Präsident Ford treibt
Dass die Abrüstung Gemogel ist
Dass Strauß noch lang' kein Vogel ist
Themen gibt's noch und noch: den Maximus Pontifex
Den Springern, die Autos, den Sex!

Und dann hör' ich sie klatschen wie immer
Und sie lachen wie immer, nur dümmer
Und sie sagen: "Man soll's nicht verschrei'n
Gottseidank fällt ihm wieder was ein!"

Ich werd' schreiben und schreiben und schreiben
Hinter Fenstern mit milchigen Scheiben
Ich werd' brav mit den Andern verblöden
Und die Erde wird langsam veröden
Ich werd' schreiben, bis es Tote gibt
Solang's noch eine Zote gibt
Werd' ich sie finden und zum Siege führ'n –
Man darf den Humor nicht verlier'n!

Und die Andern werd'n kämpfen wie immer
Und auch sterben wie immer, nur dümmer
Ich werd rufen: "Lasst mich nicht allein
Mir fällt gleich etwas Lustiges ein!
Mir fällt gleich was Besonderes
Herzenerfrischendes
Alles verwischendes
Ein!"

I'm always expected to write something witty
But I'll hold off on that for the time being
Because nowhere I go, no matter where
Can I find anything remotely funny
And that makes my pen curl up in a ball
My wheels refuse to turn at all
No matter what I write, the truth washes it away
And every punchline withers and decays

But others go on as always
And they write like always, only dumber
And they say about me in the club:
"Oh, the poor guy, he can't think of anything!"

But now I'll actually write something
Because we shouldn't be so excessive
I'll write that Kissinger plays sports
That Jackie is seeing President Ford
That disarmament is a sham
That Strauss is still no bird
There are still plenty of topics: the Maximus Pontifex
The jumpers, the cars, the sex!

And then I'll hear them applaud as always
And they'll laugh as always, only dumber
And they'll say: "You shouldn't jinx it
Thank God something new has occurred to him!"

I'll write and write and write
Behind windows with frosty panes
I'll become pleasantly stupid with the others
And the earth will slowly become desolate
I'll write until there are dead
As long as there's still a dirty joke
I'll find them and lead them to victory –
We mustn't lose our sense of humor!

And the others will fight as always
And also die as always, only dumber
I'll shout: "Don't leave me alone
Something funny just occurred to me!
Something exceptional just occurred to me
Something heartening
Something mind-boggling
Something!"
