Dans le froid, la boue et le vent
Il a franchi mille monts et torrents

Il a battu mille prés et sentiers
À perdre haleine
À grande peine

Parfois c'était des restes qu′on lui jetait

Le lit profond d'un fossé et dormait
Trois heures à peine
Pour prendre haleine
Avant le jour il repartait
La route est longue pour les humains
Elle fut plus longue pour ce chien
Tête basse et pattes ensanglantées
Le chien sans race inlassablement marchait
Guettant le moindre souffle d′air, le palpant
Il espérait, dans les odeurs du vent
Y reconnaître
Celle du maître
De son vieux maître qu′il aimait
Dans le froid et la bise qui mord
Un chien vaincu a hurlé à la mort
Trois longues nuits, mais de moins en moins fort
Dans la vallée sa plainte pèse encore
Puis en silence
La neige dense
Posa un manteau sur son corps
La route est longue pour les humains
Elle fut moins longue pour ce chien

The Dog

In the cold, the mud, and the wind
He crossed a thousand hills and streams
In the clear sky and in the fever of May
He beat a thousand meadows and paths
Breathlessly
With great difficulty
In all weathers, he walked
He ate whatever he could find
Sometimes it was leftovers that were thrown at him
He would stop late in the evening and look for
The deep bed of a ditch and sleep
Barely three hours
To catch his breath
Before leaving again at daybreak
The road is long for humans
It was longer for this dog
Head down and paws bloodied
The mongrel walked tirelessly
Watching for the slightest breath of air, feeling it
He hoped, in the scents of the wind
To recognize it
That of the master
Of his old master whom he loved
In the cold and biting wind
A defeated dog has howled to death
Three long nights, but less and less loudly
In the valley his cry still weighs
Then in silence
The dense snow
Laid a coat over his body
The road is long for humans
It was shorter for this dog
