C'est là que je suis né et sur cette colline
L'église qui domine m'y a vu baptiser
C'est lendemain de fêtes le temps fait grise mine
Les voiles ne claquent plus le mistral est tombé

J'ai lu dans le journal qu'il y a cent ans à peine
Sur un lit d'hôpital Arthur Rimbaud souffrait
Revenu de pays où se brisèrent ses ailes
Échouant dans ce port à mon âge il mourait

Une moitié de vie suffit-elle à un homme
Pour devenir un homme et comprendre la vie
Que pour lui les années qu'il espérait en somme
N'auraient que rabâché les mêmes litanies

Alors est-ce renaître ou bien traîner sa mort
Que de dépasser l'âge où Rimbaud a fini
Est-ce que ce bateau ivre ancré dans le Vieux-Port
Attend un capitaine ou est mort avec lui

Par les bleus soirs d'été j'irais par les chemins
Picoté par les blés fouler l'herbe menue
Alors tu reviendrais pour me donner la main
Et l'on se sentirait tous les deux moins perdus

Je veux croire aujourd'hui que des portes s'entrouvrent
Qu'une plus longue vie aurait pu t'apporter
Les voies que tu sentais peu à peu se découvrent
Ce sont les ignorants qui partent les premiers

Je lis dans le journal qu'un homme entre deux âges
Sur les eaux du Vieux-Port a été aperçu
Ce drôle de capitaine abordait le grand large
Sur un drôle de bateau tous deux ont disparu

It's there I was born, and on this hill
The church overseeing it watched my baptism
The day after the feasts, the weather looks gloomy
The sails aren't flapping anymore, the mistral has died down

I read in the newspaper that a hundred years ago
On a hospital bed, Arthur Rimbaud lay, suffering
Returned from distant lands where his wings faltered
Failing in this harbor, he died at my age

Is half a lifetime enough for a man
To become a man and understand life
That for him, the years he hoped to have
Would only have repeated the same litanies

So, is it being reborn or dragging one's death
To have outlived Rimbaud's demise
Is this drunken boat anchored in the Old Port
Waiting for a captain or did it die with him

On blue summer nights, I'd walk along the paths
Pricked by the wheat, treading on the delicate grass
You'd then come back and give me your hand
And we'd both feel less lost

I want to believe today that some doors have opened
That a longer life could have brought you more
The paths you sensed are slowly revealing themselves
It's the ignorant ones who leave us first

I read in the newspaper that a man in his middle years
Was spotted on the waters of the Old Port
This strange captain set sail for the open sea
On a strange boat, and they both vanished

It's there I was born, and on this hill

Today's the feast day, the weather is pleasant
The sails are flapping in the wind, the mistral has picked up
