遠い昔の雪の降る時分
箱入りの姫は密やかに逢瀬を重ねていた
男は市井(しせい)の若人 許されぬ愛は
嗚呼、何故に燃えてゆくのか
「今は雅な羽織さえも忌まわしい」
と姫は泣く
「今宵、月と共に逃げてしまおう」
男はいざ、その手を取る
駆け出す背に雪が
積もれど 積もれども
その影は闇夜に深まるばかり

朝、宮人の追っ手が迫れば
男は震える手に力込め刀を振るっていた
嗚呼、覆水は盆に返ることはない
雪に血が降り 愛の火のよう
「愛と罪とが首にきつく辛いの」
と姫は泣く
「此処で立ち止まるわけにはゆかぬ」
男はまた、その手を取る
行先など知れず
歩けど 歩けども
その時は無情に近づくばかり

「一目見た時決まった定めでしょう」
朝霧に笑みが映え
「箱の中では人生(いのち)などなかったの
もう一層 構わずに
そなたと共にどこまでも行きましょう
雪の道を」
「然(さ)らば永遠(とわ)の場所へ共にゆこう」
姫は嬉し 空を仰ぐ
迷いが消えたように
からりと晴れゆく
「さらば、永遠(とわ)の場所でまた会えよう」
男はいざ、刀を取る
震わぬ手で涙拭い
微笑み湛(たた)えた姫の胸に
刀を深く深く突き立てた 嗚呼!

Eternal Vermilion Snow

Long ago, when snow fell
The sheltered princess was secretly having a tryst.
The man was a young man from the marketplace, a forbidden love

The princess cries.

The man takes her hand.
The snow piles up on their fleeing backs,

As if her doubts have vanished,
The sky clears brightly.
"Farewell, let us meet again in that eternal place."
The man takes his sword.
Wiping his tears with a steady hand,
He plunges the sword deep, deep into the princess's smiling chest.
