Hay en el aire un cierta melancolía
Como cuando se alejan los barcos de los puertos
Y no se resignan los pañuelos
En el muelle.
Hoy el sol tampoco ha salido.
Llueve desde hace una semana,
Desde que llegó el otoño
Con su enorme hacha de patíbulo
Y decapitó lo más bello y luminoso del paisaje.
Es un verdugo el otoño,
Aunque algún poeta del crepúsculo
Le haya dedicado sus mejores versos.
La ciudad no es la misma
Bajo el cielo oscuro,
Nadie es el mismo en esta estación del año,
Es difícil encontrar una sonrisa
En días como éste.
De no ser por ti no habría salido con este día,
Se me ocurre que hoy sale únicamente la gente
Que no falta nunca a ninguna cita.
Voy despacio y seguro
Hacia la lejanía de tu rostro.
Un horizonte sin besos
Me espera y no me desespero.
Y no me desespero
Porque lo sabía amor mío,
Sabía que en una tarde como ésta
Te irías para siempre.
He visto flotar el adiós en el océano de tus ojos
Desde las flores de la última primavera,
Desde entonces tienes el equipaje listo y
El corazón viajero.
No estoy abatido ni desencantado de veras,
Tampoco sorprendido.
Sé que ninguna de mis palabras
De la más densa a la más intensa
Tendrá el peso suficiente de un ancla
Para retenerte en este desolado mar.
Si así lo quieres que así sea.
No te pediré que te quedes ni te suplicaré,
Nunca fui el capitán de tu barco
Tampoco el timonel.
El mar que te lleva es al fin y al cabo
El mar que te trajo,
El mar que siempre se queda.

Esta mañana,
Cuando me levanté y sentí en el aire
Una cierta melancolía.

A Certain Melancholy

There's a certain melancholy in the air
Like when ships sail away from the ports
And the handkerchiefs don't resign themselves
On the pier.
Today the sun hasn't come out either.
It's been raining for a week,
Ever since autumn came
With its huge executioner's ax
And beheaded the most beautiful and luminous thing in the landscape.
Autumn is an executioner,
Although some poet of the twilight
Has dedicated his best verses to it.
The city is not the same
Under the dark sky,
No one is the same in this season of the year,
It's hard to find a smile
On days like this.
If it weren't for you I wouldn't have gone out on this day,
It occurs to me that today only people go out
Who never miss any appointment.
I go slowly and surely
Towards the distantness of your face.
A horizon without kisses
Awaits me and I do not despair.
And I do not despair
Because I knew my love,
I knew that on an afternoon like this
You would leave forever.
I've seen the goodbye float in the ocean of your eyes
Since the flowers of last spring,
Since then you've had your luggage ready and
Your traveling heart.
I'm not really down or disenchanted,
Nor surprised.
I know that none of my words
From the densest to the most intense
Will have the weight of an anchor
To hold you back in this desolate sea.
If that's what you want, so be it.
I will not ask you to stay, nor will I beg you,
I was never the captain of your ship
Nor the helmsman.
The sea that takes you is after all
