Πρώτο ταξίδι έτυχε ναύλος για το Νότο,
δύσκολες βάρδιες, κακός ύπνος και μαλάρια.
Είναι παράξενα της Ίντιας τα φανάρια
και δεν τα βλέπεις, καθώς λένε με το πρώτο.

Πέρ' απ' τη γέφυρα του Αδάμ, στη Νότιο Κίνα,
χιλιάδες παραλάβαινες τσουβάλια σόγια.
Μα ούτε στιγμή δεν ελησμόνησες τα λόγια
που σου 'πανε μια κούφια ώρα στην Αθήνα

Στα νύχια μπαίνει το κατράμι και τ' ανάβει,
χρόνια στα ρούχα το ψαρόλαδο μυρίζει,
κι ο λόγος της μες' το μυαλό σου να σφυρίζει,
"ο μπούσουλας είναι που στρέφει ή το καράβι; "

Νωρίς μπατάρισε ο καιρός κι έχει χαλάσει.
Σκατζάρισες, μα σε κρατά λύπη μεγάλη.
Απόψε ψόφησαν οι δυο μου παπαγάλοι
κι ο πίθηκος που 'χα με κούραση γυμνάσει.

Η λαμαρίνα! ...η λαμαρίνα όλα τα σβήνει.
Μας έσφιξε το kuro siwo σαν μια ζωνη
κι συ κοιτάς ακόμη πάνω απ'το τιμόνι,
πως παίζει ο μπούσουλας καρτίνι με καρτίνι.

Kuro Siwo

It was my first voyage and I happened to be bound for the South,
difficult watches, poor sleep and malaria.
The lights of India are strange
and you don't see them, as they say, until you're right on top of them.

Past Adam's Bridge, in South China,
we loaded thousands of bags of soybeans.
But not for a moment did I forget the words
you spoke to me during a sleepless hour in Athens

Tar gets into your fingernails and sets them alight,
your clothes smell of fish oil for years,
and your words whistle in my mind,
"Is it the compass that turns or the ship?"

The weather broke early and became foul.
You clung on, but a great sadness gripped you.
Tonight both my parrots died
and the monkey I had trained with such effort.

The sheet metal!... The sheet metal blots everything out.
The kuro siwo tightened around us like a belt
and you continued to gaze at the compass
as the needle swung from one point to another.
