Cây dương đầu trường còn khắc hàng tên
Hoa leo phũ phàng đan kín
Tiếng ve ru nghe gợi buồn thêm

Bạn cũ xa rồi, có người về đất buông xuôi
Dăm ba đứa bạt phương trời
Hai thằng chờ đầu quân năm tới
Ve ơi, hát gì điệu nhạc lâm ly?
Khóc người biền biệt sơn khê
Cố nhân đi bao giờ mới về?

Hôm nay trở lại nhiều khuôn mặt mới
Thầy đó, trường đây, bạn cũ đâu rồi?
Bao nhiêu kỷ niệm hoa bướm ngày thơ

Old Schoolyard

Today I return to visit my old school,
So many things have changed, even the mossy roof.
By the veranda, I search for hours for old friends,
Hoping to find a few still happily living the student life.

Anxiously I wait, but why don't they come?
I ask the leaves, I ask the flowers, but all is silent.
The poplar tree at the school gate still bears our carved names,
But cruelly, climbing vines have covered them.
The cicadas' lullaby only deepens my sadness.

Old friends are gone, some have returned to the earth,
A few have wandered far away,
Two are waiting to enlist next year.
Oh cicadas, what mournful melody do you sing?
You weep for those lost in distant mountains and rivers.
When will my old companions return?

Today, I return to see many new faces.
The teacher is here, the school is here, but where are my old friends?
So many memories of butterflies and flowers in those poetic days
Echo in my longing heart.
Is there anyone who, out of love, returns to their old school?
