Esterno giorno, sul muro di cinta della scuola, tre manifesti rossi
Tre esemplari identici incollati l′uno accanto all'altro
Un discorso stampato in caratteri piccolissimi
Ma con un titolo enorme: "Attenzione cittadini"
Un genere di letteratura che nessuno legge mai
Salvo di tanto in tanto un vecchio signore
Che si ferma, mette gli occhiali, decifra riga per riga fino alla fine
Poi si fa un po′ indietro scuotendo la testa
Rimette gli occhiali nell'astuccio, rimette l'astuccio nel taschino
E riprende il cammino con perplessità
Chiedendosi se l′essenziale non gli sia sfuggito
Ogni tanto infatti spicca, come un fanale illuminante
Qualche parola a lui sospetta e la frase che questa parola illumina
Sembra per un istante nascondere molte cose o nessuna affatto
Il meccanismo perfettamente oleato della vita, continua
L′omino è già lontano

The Old Man (Prose)

Exterior, day, on the wall of the school, three red posters
Three identical copies pasted side by side
A speech printed in very small characters
But with a huge title: "Attention citizens"
A type of literature that nobody ever reads
Except occasionally an old gentleman
Who stops, puts on his glasses, and deciphers line by line to the end
Then steps back a bit, shaking his head
Puts his glasses back in their case, puts the case back in his pocket
And continues on his way with perplexity
Wondering if the essential has escaped him
For every once in a while, like an illuminating beacon,
Some word that he suspects will stand out, and the sentence that this word illuminates
Seems for a moment to hide many things or none at all
The perfectly oiled mechanism of life continues
The little man is already far away
