In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.
Heaven cannot hold him, nor the earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.
Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
But his mother only, in her maiden bliss,
Worshiped the beloved with a kiss.
What can I give him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give him: give my heart.

En ce froid hiver, le vent glacial gémissait,
La terre était dure comme du fer, l'eau comme une pierre ;
La neige était tombée, neige sur neige, neige sur neige,
En ce froid hiver, il y a bien longtemps.
Le ciel ne peut pas le contenir, ni la terre le soutenir ;
Le ciel et la terre s'enfuiront quand il viendra régner.
En ce froid hiver, un lieu stable a suffi
Au Seigneur Dieu Tout-Puissant, Jésus-Christ.
Les anges et les archanges se sont peut-être rassemblés là,
Les chérubins et les séraphins ont envahi l'air ;
Mais sa mère seule, dans sa béatitude virginale,
Adorait l'aimé d'un baiser.
Que puis-je lui donner, pauvre que je suis ?
Si j'étais un berger, j'apporterais un agneau ;
Si j'étais un sage, je ferais ma part ;
Mais ce que je peux lui donner : mon cœur.
