Seine dürren Spinnenfinger blättern aufgeregt darin
Ganze Sätze streicht er aus mit seinem Rotstift in der Hand
Und schreibt dafür, böse flüsternd, wilde Flüche an den Rand
Und schon bluten seine Finger, zucken weiter wie im Krampf –
Du gibst ihm noch eine Stunde, und dann endet dieser Kampf

Dazu schreibt er etwas auf, bringt in Reime, was er fühlt
Falsche Töne, schlechte Verse – es ist gleich wie gut er′s macht
Denn nur schreibend, spielend, singend übersteht er diese Nacht
Das macht durstig, und er dreht an dem Wasserhahn, der spritzt
Etwas aus, was nach dem riecht, was ein Sterbender ausschwitzt
Und du wünschst dir, dass er statt zu trinken in das Becken schifft
Und er tut′s und bleibt für diesmal noch verschont von diesem Gift

Es wird Morgen, Junge, nimm jetzt deine Brocken, du musst fort
Da ist ein Park mit einem Brunnen, trink und wasch dich dort
Du wirst doch noch And're finden, die sind auch so jung wie du

Hotel of the Long Twilight

You've already put a thousand miles behind you today
It's late, you search and find a place to stay for the night
From all that you've already seen and haven't understood
You are dead tired, just longing for a long rest
This hotel, the dim light in the narrow corridor
As you look around, it seems eerie and foreboding
And then you know it for sure, as you unlock the room door
That you've been here before, a long time ago

Don't fall asleep in the Hotel of the Long Twilight, stay awake
Because the breath of dead souls stagnates under this roof
And if you sleep, it eats its way deep into your brain and lungs
So that you leave this house only dying, or dead

And you sit and stay awake and wait, but time doesn't want to pass
And you feel as if you can suddenly see through the walls
You see a room, just like yours, and a boy comes in
You are startled and think you yourself could be this boy:
Big feet, big eyes, run away from home
Hair and pants much too short, as is still the custom in the countryside
Loving everything without fear, what is new and strange around him
And you ask yourself if you were ever as young as him

And he shakes his head, holding the Bible on his knees
His withered spider fingers excitedly leaf through it
He crosses out whole sentences with his red pen in his hand
And writes wild curses on the margins, whispering evil
And his fingers are already bleeding, twitching further as if in a cramp –
You give him another hour, and then this fight will end

The boy isn't asleep yet either, he takes his instrument and plays
He writes something to it, puts into rhymes what he feels
Wrong notes, bad verses – it doesn't matter how well he does it
Because only by writing, playing, singing does he survive this night
That makes you thirsty, and he turns on the faucet, it splashes
Something that smells like what a dying man sweats out
And you wish that instead of drinking he would spit into the sink
And he does it and for this time is spared from this poison
