Mein Rock ist aus feinen Spitzen und Samt
Das Barett, das von einem Obristen stammt.

Am Sattel das lange, beidhändige Schwert.
Den Sack voller Taler, zwei Schläuche
Voll Wein und die Laute aus Perlmutt und Elfenbein.
Ich habe gewonnen beim Würfelspiel,
Offiziere von Adel saufen zu viel,
Sonst hätten sie niemals in dieser Nacht
Mit mir armem Teufel dies Spiel gemacht.
Noch wissen sie nich wie ihnen geschah.
Und sind sie erst nüchtern, bin ich nicht mehr da.
War lange genug leibeigener Knecht und
Schwedischer Söldner, nun will ich mein Recht.

Ich war noch ein Knabe, da diente ich schon
Wie ein erwachsener Knecht in der Fron.
Am Tag auf dem Feld und dann in der Nacht,
Hab ich den Schlaf des Grafen bewacht.
Das Quaken der Frösche im nahen See
Vor dem Schloss tat den Ohren des Grafen so weh,
Dass er mir befahl bis zum Morgengraun
Mit einer Peitsche ins Wasser zu haun.
Dabei schlief ich ein, und ich wurde erst wach,
Als der Graf mich mit einer Mistgabel stach.
Ich warf ihn ins Wasser und bin geflohn,
Doch nach drei Tagen fing man mich schon.
Nun bin ich für immer nach Herrenrecht
Gezeichnet als ein entlaufener Knecht.
Das Mal hat der Graf mir mit eigener Hand
Knochentief in die Stirn gebrannt.

Dann kam der Krieg und ich lief wieder fort,
Diente als Söldner mal hier und mal dort.
In dieser Zeit sorgte Anna für mich.
Klug war sie und so jung wie ich.
Oft sprach sie in Bildern, die niemand verstand,
Legte die Karten, las aus der Hand.
Es hieß, sie hätte das zweite Gesicht.
Ob wahr oder unwahr, mich störte es nicht.
Man hat sie verleumdet, verfolgt und verlacht,
Uns mit Gewalt auseinandergebracht.
Erst hat der Profos mich eingesperrt
Und Anna zu sich in sein Bett gezerrt.
Als sie ihm die Halsschlagader durchbiss,
Ihm mit ihren Nägeln den Rücken zerriss,
Hat man sie gefoltert und kurzer Hand
Als Hexe lebendigen Leibes verbrannt.

Zwanzig Jahre schon dauert der Krieg,
Nirgendwo Frieden und nirgends ein Sieg.
Mit dem Mal auf der Stirn blieb ich was ich war,
Söldner und Landsknecht Jahr für Jahr.
Hab nicht erst nach höheren Ehren geschielt,
Hab getötet, gesoffen, gehurt und gespielt.
Weiß nicht einmal mein alter genau.
Ich bin nicht mehr jung, mein Bart wird grau.
Noch hab ich fast sämtliche Zähne im Maul,
Seh wie ein Habicht, bin stark wie ein Gaul.
Ich reite nach Flandern, nach Gent und Brabant,
Lebe in Frieden von niemand erkannt.
Nehme die schönste Witwe zum Weib,
Schlage die Laute zum Zeitvertreib.
Um dann als Schankwirt bei Braten und Wein,
Mir selbst und den Gästen gefällig zu sein.

Nun höre ich Reiter ganz dicht hinter mir.
Ich steige vom Pferd und erwarte sie hier.
Vorn reitet der klapprige, alte Obrist,
Der sein Pferd, seinen Rock, sein Barett vermisst.
Der Hauptmann, dem ich das Schwert abgewann
Und die Laute auf der er nicht spielen kann.
Der Leutnant mit dem verstümmelten Ohr,
Der all seine Taler an mich verlor.
Lebt wohl, schöne Witwen, in Gent und Brabant,
Ich habe geträumt mich geirrt mich verrannt.
Es gibt keinen Frieden für einen wie mich,
Ich packe das Schwert und das halte ich.
Viel zu verkrampft, meine Hände sind heiß,
Längst ist der Griff schon nass von Schweiß.
Mein Traum macht mir das Töten so schwer,
Aber das Sterben, das Sterben noch mehr
