Wieder unterwegs

Von Norden kommend, bin ich schon seit Stunden auf der Straße, fahre ohne Eile, döse vor mich hin
Bei Hannover irgendwo mach′ ich eine kleine Pause, weil ich tanken muß, und weil ich hungrig bin
Und dann roll' ich wieder weiter. An der Ausfahrt steh′n zwei Jungs, ich halte an und sie steigen zu mir ein
Sie erzählen dies und jenes, daß sie beide achtzehn sind und wollen noch vor Mitternacht in Frankfurt sein
Beide können keine Arbeit kriegen, möchten gern' was lernen, sind das jahrelange Gammeln endlich leid
Wollen sich mit Leuten treffen, denen es nicht anders geht, sind zum Betteln, Schlangesteh'n nicht mehr bereit
So vergeht die Zeit mit Reden; bei der Abfahrt "Sauerland" bieg′ ich ab und lass′ die beiden wieder raus
Diese jungen Leute lassen nicht mehr alles mit sich machen, vielleicht sieht die Zukunft so schlecht gar nicht aus!

Hab's mir selbst so ausgesucht
Und auch tausend Mal verflucht
Andererseits –
Man kommt viel ′rum und man sieht
Was im Lande so geschieht
Selbst wenn man manches nicht versteht
Wie man's auch wendet und dreht
Aber eins kommt doch meist dabei raus
Und das ist: man lernt nie aus
Glutrot geht die Sonne unter, wunderbar, doch irgendetwas ist da, was mich deprimiert und ′runterzieht
Und der Grund ist bald gefunden, denn im Autoradio läuft seit Stunden so ein Disco-Schweinebeat
Ich dreh' ab, gleich geht′s mir besser, fange selber an zu singen aber plötzlich spuckt und stottert der Motor
Kurz entschlossen fahr' ich rechts auf einem Knüppeldamm entlang, der führt kerzengrade mitten durch ein Moor
Die Benzinuhr leuchtet auf, ich schaffe noch fünf Kilometer und dann sitz' ich fest – weiß nicht mal, wo ich bin!
Es wird dunkel und ich lausche, höre Schüsse, Hundebellen: "Das sind Jäger", denk′ ich, "vielleicht find′ ich hin."
Und ich nehme den Kanister, komme an ein Lagerfeuer, seh' mich um und höre jemand "Wer da?" schrei′n –
Schwarze Kutten, Knobelbecher, Messer und Gewehre seh' ich, Schäferhunde: Jäger können das nicht sein!
Hände packen mich von hinten, zerren mich brutal zum Feuer; einer, der wahrscheinlich Chef der Gruppe ist
Schreit: "Den kenne ich, den Lumpenhund, der singt undeutsche Lieder! Ein Spitzel ist er, und ein Kommunist!
Für Spione keine Gnade! Sprengkommando angetreten! Sucht das Auto, und dann jagt es in die Luft!
Unsre Jüngsten soll′n beweisen, dass sie echte Männer sind! Sofort abführ'n und erschießen, diesen Schuft!"
Und schon führen mich drei Knaben in den nah′ geleg'nen Wald, sind bleich vor Angst; auch mir zittern die Knie
Doch ich nutze die Sekunde, als mein Wagen explodiert, das ist meine letzte Chance – jetzt oder nie!
Und ich renne, renne, renne, wie noch nie in meinem Leben, höre das Geschrei, die Schüsse hinter mir
Dazu platzt mit einemmal ein Gewitterregen nieder. Denken kann ich nicht, nur fliehen wie ein Tier

Andererseits –
Man kommt viel ′rum und man sieht
Was im Lande so geschieht
Selbst wenn man manches nicht versteht
Wie man′s auch wendet und dreht
Aber eins kommt doch meist dabei raus
Und das ist: man lernt nie aus
Und mal stürz' ich über Wurzeln, und ersticke fast im Schlamm; Dornen reißen mir das Fleisch aus dem Gesicht
Die Stiefel hab′ ich längst verloren – ich kann keinen Schritt mehr geh'n: mir gleich, ob sie mich finden, oder nicht!
Und ich schlafe einfach ein, wache erst nach Stunden auf von zartem Flötenspiel im Sonnenschein
Vor mir sitzt im hohen Gras ein Mädchen, bläst die Weidenflöte, trägt ein selbstgenähtes Kleid und lächelt fein
Nimmt mir dann mit spitzen Fingern den Benzinkanister ab, denn den trage ich noch immer in der Hand
Übergibt ihn ein paar Leuten, die grad′ in der Nähe sind, die verbuddeln ihn fünf Meter tief im Sand.
Meine Angst kommt wieder hoch, und als ich schreie: "Hilfe! Mörder!" sagt das Mädchen sanft: "Ich will, daß du verstehst:
Für uns bist du unser Bruder, und wir wollen gar nicht wissen, wer du bist, woher du kommst, wohin du gehst."
Und sie führt mich in ihr Haus, heilt mir meine wunden Füße, kühlt mit Kräutern mein Gesicht, bringt Brot und Wein
Sie bereitet mir ein Lager, hockt sich hin zu meinen Füßen, nimmt die Flöte, spielt – bald schlaf' ich wie ein Stein
Fühl′ mich gut am nächsten Morgen und sie bringt mir frische Kleider, Holzsandalen und ein leinenes Gewand
Als sie sieht, dass ich noch hinke, setzt sie mich auf einen Esel, drückt mir Brot und Ziegenkäse in die Hand
Wär' so gerne noch geblieben, aber ich muss weiterreiten, weil mein Puls nun einmal in einem Rhythmus schlägt
Der sich mit dem stillen Leben, diesem handgewebten Frieden fern der Welt, auf die Dauer nicht verträgt
Doch von wegen "fern der Welt": ich bin kaum hundert Schritt geritten, steh' ich schon vor einem Stacheldrahtverhau
Seit heut′ Nacht ist hier klammheimlich – niemand hatte das bemerkt – ein gewaltiges Atomkraftwerk im Bau

Wieder hör' ich Hunde bellen, sehe Männer mit Gewehren, schlage einen großen Bogen durch den Wald
Reite weiter, Stunden, Tage, unter Autobahnen durch, mach′ am Ufer eines Flusses endlich halt –
Plötzlich ringsum viele Menschen, die laut beten, seufzen, singen, sich die Haare raufen, "Halleluja!" schrei'n:
"Seht den Mann dort auf dem Esel, das Gewand und die Sandalen! Hosianna, Freunde, das muß Jesus sein!"
Und ich flüchte in den Strom, spring′ von einem Stein zum andern, und am Ufer knien die Pilger im Gebet
Müssen zuseh'n, wie ich stürze, wie ihr falscher Herr und Heiland – kaum erschienen – wieder kläglich untergeht
Gleich reißt mich die Strömung fort, meilenweit. Der Fluß wird breiter, und ich schwimme, kämpfe, komme nicht an Land
Links und rechts Chemiefabriken, und das Wasser schäumt und stinkt – halb ertrunken treibe ich zum Uferrand
Und am Ufer spielen Kinder; gurgelnd schreie ich um Hilfe, doch es ist, als brüllt' ich gegen eine Wand
Einer taucht die Finger in den giftverseuchten Fluß, leckt sich den Schaum wie Zuckerwatte von der Hand
Die anderen lallen, kichern, kotzen und dass ich ans Ufer krieche, fast verrecke, merken sie nicht mehr
Auch ich hab′ von dem Schaum gefressen, literweise Gift geschluckt – nackter Horror fällt über mich her
Ich sehe Kinder mit drei Köpfen, Fratzen – grauenhafte Monster dringen auf mich ein, sind plötzlich riesengroß!
Und ich kreische vor Entsetzen, reiße einem kleinen Jungen schnell sein Skateboard aus der Hand und rase los
Doch bald komm′ ich wieder zu mir, immer noch auf meinem Skateboard, flügelschlagend torkle ich wie ein Hahn
Auf 'ner Henne, die nicht will – und das bei Tempo 130, als Geisterfahrer auf der Autobahn

Andererseits –

Wie man′s auch wendet und dreht
Aber eins kommt doch meist dabei raus
Und das ist: man lernt nie aus
Höre Hupen, Reifen quietschen, sehe Autos bremsen, schleudern, finde eine Ausfahrt; als ich kurz darauf
Die Autobahn verlasse, und ich schaue mich kurz um, türmt sich hinter mir ein Schrottgebirge auf
Der Lärm wird unerträglich, auch Sirenen jaulen auf – "Lalülalü" – die Polizei ist auch schon da
Doch die sollen mich nicht kriegen! Ich muss mich verstecken, tarnen, und dann seh' ich auch die Rettung schon ganz nah:
Überall am Straßenrand stehen Hunderte von Schildern, Wahlplakate einer christlichen Partei
Darauf steht in großen Lettern: "SOZIALISMUS FÜHRT INS ELEND!" und ich halte an, und greife mir gleich zwei
Die hänge ich mir um den Hals, rolle unter dieser Tarnung unerkannt durch Frankfurt als ein Sandwich-Mann
Die Parole auf den Schildern, die zerriss′nen Klamotten: dies Kostüm kommt bei den Leuten richtig an
Als ich um die Ecke biege, hinterm Eschersheimer Turm, bin ich zwischen Menschenmassen eingekeilt –
Alles linke Demonstranten, und die starr'n auf meine Schilder. Nichts wie weg – hier werden Prügel ausgeteilt!
Doch ich weiß, die Linken lassen sich, bevor sie jemand schlagen, meistens erst auf Diskussionen ein
Das bestätigt sich auch diesmal: sie bestürmen mich mit Fragen, doch was ich erzähle glaubt mir hier kein Schwein!
Kurz und gut: diese Geschichte nimmt doch noch ein gutes Ende, denn ich werde plötzlich von zwei Jungs erkannt –
Ausgerechnet von den beiden, die ich mitgenommen habe zu Beginn der Fahrt durch dies' verrückte Land
Und sie geben mir zu essen, bringen mir eine Gitarre und dann tu′ ich das, was ich am besten kann:
Stimme kurz das Instrument – dazu brauch′ ich eine Stunde – und schon fange ich ein Lied zu singen an
Und zwar:

Back on the Road

Coming from the north, I've been on the road for hours, driving leisurely, just dozing off
Somewhere near Hanover I'll take a short break, because I need to refuel, and I'm hungry
And then I'll roll on again. At the exit there are two boys, I stop and they get in with me
They tell me this and that, that they are both eighteen and want to be in Frankfurt before midnight
Both can't find work, would like to learn something, are finally tired of years of loitering
Want to meet people who are in the same boat, are no longer willing to beg and stand in line
So the time passes with talking; at the "Sauerland" exit I turn off and let the two out again
These young people don't let everything happen to them anymore, maybe the future doesn't look so bad after all!

On the other hand –
You get around a lot and you see
What's happening in the country
Even if you don't understand some things
However you turn it and twist it
But one thing usually comes out of it
And that is: you never stop learning
The sun sets blood-red, wonderful, but there's something there that depresses me and drags me down
And the reason is soon found, because on the car radio for hours there's been this disco pig beat
I turn it off, I'll feel better right away, start singing myself but suddenly the engine sputters and stutters
I make a quick decision and drive to the right along a corduroy road that leads straight through a moor
The fuel gauge lights up, I can manage another five kilometers and then I'm stuck – I don't even know where I am!
It gets dark and I listen, hear shots, dogs barking: "Those are hunters," I think, "maybe I can find my way."
And I take the canister, come to a campfire, look around and hear someone yell "Who's there?" –
Black robes, dice cups, knives and guns I see, shepherd dogs: Hunters can't be that!
Hands grab me from behind, drag me brutally to the fire; one, who is probably the leader of the group
Screams: "I know him, the scoundrel, who sings un-German songs! He's a spy and a communist!
No mercy for spies! Demolition squad assembled! Find the car, and then blow it up!
Our youngest ones shall prove that they are real men! Take this scoundrel away and shoot him immediately!"
And already three boys are leading me into the nearby forest, pale with fear; my knees are shaking too
But I use the second when my car explodes, this is my last chance – now or never!
And I run, run, run, like never before in my life, hear the screams, the shots behind me
On top of that, a thunderstorm suddenly breaks out. I can't think, just flee like an animal

What's happening in the country
Even if you don't understand some things
However you turn it and twist it
But one thing usually comes out of it
And that is: you never stop learning
And sometimes I fall over roots, and almost suffocate in the mud; thorns tear the flesh from my face
I lost my boots long ago – I can't walk another step: I don't care if they find me or not!
And I just fall asleep, only wake up hours later to the sound of gentle flute playing in the sunshine
In front of me sits a girl in the tall grass, playing the willow flute, wearing a self-sewn dress and smiling sweetly
Then she takes the gas canister from me with her pointed fingers, because I'm still carrying it in my hand
Hands it over to some people who are nearby, who bury it five meters deep in the sand.
My fear comes back up, and when I scream: "Help! Murderers!" the girl says softly: "I want you to understand:
For us you are our brother, and we don't want to know who you are, where you come from, where you are going."
And she leads me into her house, heals my wounded feet, cools my face with herbs, brings bread and wine
She prepares a bed for me, squats down at my feet, takes the flute, plays – soon I sleep like a stone
I feel good the next morning and she brings me fresh clothes, wooden sandals and a linen garment
When she sees that I'm still limping, she puts me on a donkey, presses bread and goat cheese into my hand
I would have loved to stay, but I have to keep riding because my pulse beats in a rhythm
That in the long run cannot stand the quiet life, this hand-woven peace far from the world
But speaking of "far from the world": I have hardly ridden a hundred steps, I am already standing in front of a barbed wire fence
Since last night, a huge nuclear power plant has been secretly under construction here – nobody had noticed

Again I hear dogs barking, see men with guns, make a big detour through the forest
Ride on, hours, days, under highways through, finally stop at the bank of a river –
Suddenly surrounded by many people who pray loudly, sigh, sing, tear their hair out, shout "Hallelujah!":
"Look at the man there on the donkey, the garment and the sandals! Hosanna, friends, this must be Jesus!"
And I flee into the stream, jump from one stone to the next, and on the bank the pilgrims kneel in prayer
They have to watch as I fall, as their false Lord and Savior – barely appeared – miserably perishes again
Immediately the current carries me away, for miles. The river widens, and I swim, fight, can't get to land
Left and right chemical factories, and the water foams and stinks – half drowned I drift to the shore
And children are playing on the shore; gurgling I cry for help, but it's as if I'm yelling against a wall
One dips his fingers into the poisoned river, licks the foam like cotton candy from his hand
The others babble, giggle, vomit and that I crawl to the shore, almost die, they no longer notice
I too have eaten of the foam, swallowed liters of poison – naked horror falls upon me
I see children with three heads, grimaces – horrible monsters advance on me, are suddenly gigantic!
And I scream in horror, quickly snatch a skateboard from a little boy's hand and speed away
But soon I come to my senses again, still on my skateboard, flapping my wings I stagger like a rooster
On a hen that doesn't want to – and that at 130 km/h, as a wrong-way driver on the highway

I hear horns, tires screeching, see cars braking, skidding, find an exit; shortly afterwards
When I leave the highway, and I look around briefly, a mountain of scrap metal piles up behind me
The noise becomes unbearable, sirens are also howling – "Lalülalü" – the police are already there
But they shouldn't get me! I have to hide, camouflage myself, and then I see the rescue very close:
Everywhere along the roadside there are hundreds of signs, election posters of a Christian party
On them it says in large letters: "SOCIALISM LEADS TO MISERY!" and I stop and grab two right away
I hang them around my neck, roll unrecognized through Frankfurt as a sandwich man under this disguise
The slogan on the signs, the torn clothes: this costume really goes down well with the people
As I turn the corner behind the Eschersheimer Turm, I am wedged between crowds of people –
All left-wing demonstrators, and they stare at my signs. Get out of here – there's going to be a fight!
But I know that before they hit anyone, leftists usually get into discussions first
This is confirmed this time as well: they assail me with questions, but nobody here believes a word I say!
Long story short: this story still has a happy ending, because suddenly I am recognized by two boys –
Of all people, the two I picked up at the beginning of the journey through this crazy country
And they give me something to eat, bring me a guitar and then I do what I do best:
I briefly tune the instrument – I need an hour for that – and then I start singing a song
And that is:
