Idą na Londyn! Idą purytanie!
Siłą ich czystość czyli lęk przed grzechem.
Lęk rodzi wściekłość, a wściekłość - powstanie;
Idą pokonać chrześcijan - chrześcijanie.
Mgłą dysząc zamiast oddechem.
Broni się grzeszny król i pomazaniec.
Nie tyle władzy żal mu, co zasady.
Żal płynie z winy, a z winy - kajanie.
Lecz nie kajania pragną purytanie:
Muszą dowody mieć - zdrady.
Dowodem - zdrada. Ów zdrajca zdradzony
Przez własne siły (te, na które liczył).
Nie może przecież zachować korony,
Skoro przez Boga został osądzony,
I sądzą go jego stronnicy.
Jak zwykle chaos jest przy tym i zamęt,
Ulica prawdę waży i rozdziela,
O swoją przyszłość troszczy się parlament,
Skazaniec łzawy szkicuje testament -
Z myślą o losie Cromwella.
Turla się głowa królewska pod stopy.
Sprawiedliwości stało się więc zadość.
Dla zniewolonej wzór to Europy:
Szafot wszak w końcu biskup sam pokropił
I wielka nastała radość!
Wszystko to rankiem nadziei i wiary,
Gdy strach i skrucha były zmian motorem.
Wieczorem Cromwell rozpędza parlament,
Sam się mianuje Lordem Protektorem:
Ofiara własnej ofiary.
Idą na Londyn! Idą purytanie!

Cromwell

They're marching on London! The Puritans are marching!
Their strength is their purity, or rather their fear of sin.
Fear breeds fury, and fury - rebellion;
They come to vanquish Christians - Christians.
Breathless with fog.
The sinful king and anointed defends himself.
He regrets not so much the loss of power, but the principle.
Regret flows from guilt, and from guilt - contrition.
But the Puritans do not seek contrition:
They must have proof - treason.
Evidence - betrayal. That betrayer betrayed
By his own forces (those on which he counted).
He cannot after all keep the crown,
Since he has been judged by God,
And his supporters judge him.
As usual, there is chaos and confusion,
The street weighs and dispenses truth,
Parliament cares for its future,
The condemned sketches a testament of tears -
Thinking of Cromwell's fate.
The royal head rolls to the feet.
Justice has therefore been done.
For enslaved Europe, this is a model:
After all, the scaffold was sprinkled by the bishop himself
And great was the joy!
All this in the morning of hope and faith,
When fear and remorse were the engines of change.
In the evening, Cromwell disperses the parliament,
Proclaims himself Lord Protector:
A victim of his own sacrifice.
