Vivia sozinha,
Num ranchinho velho, feito de sopapo,
O seu rádio de noite era o canto de um sapo,
Sua cama uma esteira entendida no chão.
Sua refeição era um bocado de charque e farinha,
Pois nem prá comer a coitada não tinha,
Sequer no café, um pedaço de pão.
Levei pro meu sítio,
Troquei por cetim os seus trapos de chita,
Até prá "marvada" se ver mais bonita
Pus luz no seu quarto, invés de candeeiro.
E só por dinheiro, sabem o que fez essa ingrata mulher?:
Fugiu com o doutor que eu mesmo chamei
E paguei prá curar os seus bichos-de-pé.
Assim me falou
Um pobre matuto, coitado, chorando
Em seu desespero foi me ensinando,
Que em todo lugar mulher sempre é mulher.
Se pede uma flor e a gente lhe dá ela exige uma estrela
E se por acaso ela não obtê-la
Se vai com o primeiro homem que lhe der.

She lived alone,
In an old hut, made of sopapo,
At night her radio was the song of a toad,
Her bed was a mat on the floor.
Her meal was a chunk of jerky and flour,
For this poor woman did not have enough to eat,
Not even a piece of bread with her coffee.
I took her to my farm,
Exchanged her rags of chita for satin,

I put light in her room, instead of a candle.
