Vivía en Nueva York nuestro jíbaro ilustre, Rafael Hernández
Su música ya se había dejado sentir en el amor de los boricuas en aquella urbe
En la isla y en países hermanos como Cuba, México y Suramérica

La fama era recibida con orgullo en la isla
Pero esta estaba sumida en la pobreza
Rafael, enterado de la situación de su tierra, lloro amargamente
Él como artista, ¿qué podía hacer?

Pintarla, para que los hombres vieran a través de su mensaje en versos como sufría la isla
Era lo único que se le ocurría al cantor
Al soñador, al poeta enamorado de su tierra
No había dinero
No había productos de la tierra

Un lamento le ahogo la garganta mientras el sollozo se hacían notas musicales
En el pentagrama de su desesperación
Sale loco de contento, esbozo aprisa
Con su cargamento para la ciudad

Y en su mente de jíbaro ausente
Sentía alma dentro el dolor de su patria
Y veía retratados los paisajes de su tierra allende los mares

Y vio el lamentable espectáculo que hayo nuestro campesino
Al llegar a la plaza del mercado
Frutos y viandas, algunas
Pero ¿quién las iba a comprar?

Y triste el jibarito regresa diciendo así

La obra estaba terminada
Y al llegar Rafael a este dato tan doloroso
Habían nacido su "Lamento Borincano"
Un parto sentimental
Respondiendo a un grito de su tierra

Lament Borincano
In the early years of the third decade of this century
Rafael Hernández, our illustrious jíbaro, lived in New York
His music had already made itself felt in the love of the Puerto Ricans in that city
On the island and in brother countries such as Cuba, Mexico, and South America

The fame was received with pride on the island
But it was mired in poverty
Rafael, aware of the situation in his homeland, wept bitterly
What could he do as an artist?

To paint it, so that men could see through his message in verse how the island was suffering
It was the only thing that occurred to the singer
To the dreamer, to the poet in love with his land
There was no money
There were no products of the land

A lament choked his throat as the sob became musical notes
On the staff of his desperation
He leaves, crazy with joy, sketches quickly
With his cargo for the city

And in his mind of absent countryman
He felt his homeland's pain within his soul
And he saw the landscapes of his land beyond the seas

And he saw the lamentable spectacle that our countryman met
Upon reaching the market square
Fruits and vegetables, some
But who was going to buy them?

And sad, the little countryman returns saying thus
Crying thus along the way
What will become of Borinquen
My dear God
What will become of my children and my home

The work was finished
And when Rafael reached this painful point
His "Lamento Borincano" had been born
A sentimental birth
Responding to a cry from his land
