[Artilleryman:] We're gonna build a whole new world for ourselves. Look, they clap eyes on us and we're dead, right? So we gotta make a new life where they'll never find us. You know where? [Underground.]

You should see it down there - hundreds of miles of drains - sweet and clean now after the rain, dark, quiet, safe. We can build houses and everything, start again from scratch.

And what's so bad about living underground eh? It's not been so great living up here, if you want my opinion.

I've got a plan!

Can't you just see it? Civilization starting all over again - a second chance. We'll even build a railway and tunnel to the coast, go there for our holidays. Nothing can stop men like us. I've made a start already. Come on down here and have a look.

[Journalist:] We drank and then he insisted upon playing cards. With our species on the edge of extermination, with no prospect but a horrible death, we actually played games.

Later, he talked more of his plan, but I saw flames flashing in the deep blue night. Red Weed glowing, tripod figures moving distantly - and I put down my champagne glass. I felt a traitor to my kind and I knew I must leave this strange dreamer.
[Artilleryman:] Take a look around you at the world we've come to know

[Artilleur :] On va se construire un tout nouveau monde. Écoutez, ils nous voient et nous sommes morts, d'accord ? Donc, nous devons nous faire une nouvelle vie où ils ne nous trouveront jamais. Vous savez où ? [Sous terre.]

Vous devriez voir ça en bas - des centaines de kilomètres d'égouts - propres et nets maintenant après la pluie, sombres, calmes, sûrs. On peut construire des maisons et tout, repartir de zéro.

Et qu'est-ce qu'il y a de mal à vivre sous terre ? Ce n'était pas si bien que ça de vivre ici, si vous voulez mon avis.

Tu ne le vois pas ? La civilisation qui recommence à zéro - une seconde chance. On construira même un chemin de fer et un tunnel jusqu'à la côte, on ira y passer nos vacances. Rien ne peut arrêter des hommes comme nous. J'ai déjà commencé. Viens voir en bas.
[Journaliste :] Dans la cave se trouvait un tunnel d'à peine trois mètres de long, qu'il lui avait fallu une semaine pour creuser. J'aurais pu creuser autant en un jour, et j'ai soudain eu une première idée du gouffre qui séparait ses rêves de ses pouvoirs.
[Artilleur :] C'est le travail [et] la réflexion qui fatiguent un homme. Je suis prêt pour un peu de repos. Que diriez-vous d'un verre ? Rien que du champagne, maintenant que je suis le patron.
[Journaliste :] Nous avons bu, puis il a insisté pour jouer aux cartes. Alors que notre espèce était au bord de l'extinction, sans autre perspective qu'une mort horrible, nous jouions à des jeux.

Plus tard, il me parla davantage de son plan, mais je vis des flammes vaciller dans la nuit bleue profonde. L'Herbe Rouge luisait, des silhouettes de trépieds se déplaçaient au loin - et je posai ma coupe de champagne. Je me sentais un traître à mon espèce et je savais que je devais quitter cet étrange rêveur.
