その日は随分と平凡で
当たり障り無い一日だった
暇つぶしに聞いてたラジオから
あの話が流れ出すまでは

「非常に残念なことですが、
本日地球は終わります」と
どこかの国の大統領が
泣きながら話をするまでは。

窓の外は大きな鳥たちが空覆い尽くしてく渋滞中
三日月を飲み込んでどこかへと向かってる
やりかけてたゲームはノーセーブ
机にほぼ手つかず参考書
震える身体をいなす様にすぐにヘッドフォンをした

不明なアーティスト項目の
タイトル不明のナンバーが
途端に耳元流れ出した
「生き残りたいでしょう？」

蠢きだす世界会場を
波打つように揺れる摩天楼
紛れもないこの声はどう聞いても
聞き飽きた自分の声だ

「あの丘を越えたら20秒で
その意味を嫌でも知ることになるよ。
疑わないで、耳を澄ませたら20秒先へ」

交差点は当然大渋滞
もう老若男女は関係ない
怒号やら赤ん坊の泣き声で埋まっていく

暴れだす人 泣き出す少女
祈りだした神父を追い抜いて
ただ一人目指すのは逆方向
あの丘の向こうへと

ヘッドフォンから依然声がして
「あと12分だよ」と告げる
このまま全て消え去ってしまうならもう術は無いだろう

ざわめき出す悲鳴合唱を
涙目になってかすめる10秒

疑いたいけど誰がどうやっても
終わらない人類賛歌

「駆け抜けろ, もう残り１分だ。」
その言葉ももう聞こえない位に

ただ目指していた丘の向こうは
すぐ目の前に

息も絶え絶えたどり着いたんだ
空を映し出す壁の前に
その向こう白衣の科学者たちは
「素晴らしい」と手を打った

疑うよ。

そこから見る街の風景は
まるで実験施設の様でさ

「もう不必要だ。」
科学者は片手間に爆弾を投げた

箱の中の小さな世界で
今までずっと生きてきたんだなと

燃え尽きていく街だったモノを
ただ、呆然と見る耳元で

ヘッドフォンの向こうから
「ごめんね」と声がした

That day was quite ordinary
An innocuous day,
Listening to the radio to pass the time
Until that story began to unfold.

“It is with great regret that we announce,
Today, the Earth will end,”
The president of some country
Speaking through tears.

Outside the window, huge birds fill the sky in a traffic jam
Gobbling up the crescent moon and making their way somewhere
The game I had been playing, unsaved
Textbooks on my desk, almost untouched
I put on my headphones immediately, to soothe my trembling body.

From an unknown artist,
A song with no title
Suddenly flowed into my ears,
“Do you want to survive?”

The world outside is in an uproar,
Skyscrapers swaying like waves
That unmistakable voice,
It’s my own voice, the one I hear every day.

“If you go over that hill, in 20 seconds,
You will inevitably learn its meaning.
Don’t doubt, listen closely and go 20 seconds into the future.”

The intersection is of course in a massive traffic jam.
Age, gender, none of it matters anymore,
Filled with shouts and the cries of infants.

People are rioting, a girl is weeping
I pass by a priest who has begun to pray
My destination is the only place in the opposite direction
Beyond that hill.

The voice from my headphones continues,
“12 minutes left,” it says.
If everything disappears like this, then there’s nothing I can do.

A chorus of screams echoes,
My vision blurs with tears for 10 seconds.

I want to doubt it, but no matter what anyone says,
This anthem for humanity will never end.

“Run, there’s only 1 minute left.”
Those words are already too faint to hear.

The hill I had been aiming for is just ahead,
Right before my eyes.

I arrive, gasping for breath.
Before me is a wall reflecting the sky.
On the other side, scientists in white coats
Applaud and exclaim, “Splendid!”

I have my doubts.

The view of the city from here
Looks just like an experimental facility.

“It’s no longer necessary.”
The scientist casually tosses a bomb.

In this tiny world within a box,
That’s where I’ve been living all this time.

The city that burns before my eyes was,
I simply watch in a daze, my ears still ringing.

From beyond my headphones,
I hear a voice say, “I’m sorry.”
