Kundera's grandmother, and mine,
Recognized every herb and its uses,
Knew what was hidden inside mattresses,
Could read the sky and bake bread.
Kundera's grandmother in her Czech village,

Nothing was secret around them.
Kundera's neighbor resembles mine.
If he has something remarkable, no one would say it.
He's a very correct man who spends his day
Eight hours typing on a computer.
My neighbor comes home, turns on the TV,
And toasts with the family with "El Gaitero" cider
When the announcer states that in the whole world,
There is no place safer than our city.
My neighbor never knew that that same night,
A teenage girl was raped on his street,
Two old women were assaulted, and a homeless man
Was found with his throat cut in the alleyway.
My neighbor, that night, went to bed
Convinced he had the world under control,
Sure of being a very well-informed man
About what was happening around him.
