When I was just a wee little boy, full of health and joy.
One Christmas morning I received The Marvellous Little Toy.
A wonder to behold it was with many colours bright
And the moment I laid eyes on it, it became my heart's delight.

It went zip when it moved and bop when it stopped whirrrrr when it stood

I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.

The first time that I picked it up I had a big surprise.
For right on it's bottom were two big buttons that looked like big green eyes.
I first pushed one and then the other, then I twisted its lid.
And when I set it down again, this is what it did.

It went zip when it moved and bop when it stopped whirrrrr when it stood still
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.

It first marched left and then marched right, then marched under a chair
And when I looked where it had gone it wasn't even there.
I started to cry but my Daddy laughed 'cause he knew that I would find.
When i turned around my marvellous toy would be chugging from behind.

The years have gone by too quickly it seems, I have my own little boy.
And yesterday I gave to him my marvellous little toy
His eyes nearly popped right out of his head and he gave a squeal of glee...
Neither one of us knows just what it is but he loves it just like me.

It still goes zip when it moves and bop when it stops, whirrrrr when it
Stands still

Le Jouet Merveilleux

Quand j'étais un petit garçon, plein de santé et de joie.
Un matin de Noël, j'ai reçu Le Jouet Merveilleux.
Une merveille à voir, avec tant de couleurs vives
Et dès que j'ai posé les yeux dessus, il est devenu le délice de mon cœur.

Il faisait "zip" quand il bougeait et "bop" quand il s'arrêtait, "whirrrrr" quand il restait
immobile
Je n'ai jamais su ce que c'était exactement, et je suppose que je ne le saurai jamais.

La première fois que je l'ai ramassé, j'ai eu une grande surprise.
Car au bas, il y avait deux gros boutons qui ressemblaient à de grands yeux verts.
J'ai d'abord appuyé sur l'un, puis sur l'autre, puis j'ai tourné son couvercle.
Et quand je l'ai remis en place, voilà ce qu'il a fait.

Il a d'abord marché à gauche, puis à droite, puis sous une chaise
Et quand j'ai regardé où il était allé, il n'était même plus là.
J'ai commencé à pleurer, mais mon papa a ri parce qu'il savait que je le retrouverais.
Quand je me suis retourné, mon jouet merveilleux était en train de rouler derrière moi.

Les années ont passé trop vite, il me semble, j'ai mon propre petit garçon.
Et hier, je lui ai donné mon jouet merveilleux.
Ses yeux ont failli sortir de sa tête et il a poussé un cri de joie...
Ni lui ni moi ne savons ce que c'est exactement, mais il l'aime autant que moi.
