It was a hot day in Sinoia and I'd just done a show.
I was talking to the children outside the Town Hall door.
something made me turn around; there stood this little chap
With Sergeant stripes and a uniform and a little soldier's cap.
I said "Hey sonny what's your name?" and with a twinkle in his eye,
He turned and gave me a smart salute and he said "I'm Sergeant Guy"
He told me that his father was somewhere out there in the war
And this is what he said to me when I asked him to tell me some more.
" I sometimes miss my dad at night and the stories he tells me,
But he's been gone for a month or so protecting our country
But mom and I, we manage fine but sometimes she looks sad
And I wish that he was home right now but the army needs my Dad...
One day I'll be a troopie, protecting my fair land
With a cammo jacket just like Dad's and a rifle in my hand
And I'm gonna be the bravest when the terrs are comin' near
But Mom says I must wait a while 'cos' I'm only eight next year.
We'll go fishing on my birthday and my friends will come along
And when the campfire's burning Dad will sing his troopie songs
And Mom's not looking sad no more 'cos the phone call came today;
It was my troopie hero, and he says he's on his way"
One day I'll be a troopie, protecting my fair land
With a cammo jacket just like Dad's and a rifle in my hand
And I'm gonna be the bravest when the terrs are comin' near
But Mom says I must wait a while 'cos' I'm only eight next year.

C'était une chaude journée à Sinoia et je venais de terminer un spectacle.
Je parlais aux enfants devant la porte de la mairie.

Avec une veste camouflage comme celle de papa et un fusil à la main

Mais maman dit que je dois attendre encore un peu car je n'aurai que huit ans l'année prochaine.
On ira pêcher pour mon anniversaire et mes amis viendront
Et quand le feu de camp brûlera, papa chantera ses chansons militaires
Et maman n'a plus l'air triste car le coup de téléphone est arrivé aujourd'hui ;
