On the Via Dolorosa

We are on the Via Dolorosa the way of
The Cross having just left the Praetorium
Where Pilate said to Christ I washed my hands off the matter
And turned him over to the people and
Told them to do what they would with him
There's no traffic here the streets's very narrow
Little children playing along the
Street the street's about ten feet wide
You see the third station of the Cross
Where Christ almost fell under the weight of the Cross
He's kneeling and the fourth station of the Cross over there
Over forty or fifty feet farther toward Calvary
Where His mother came up to Him and said my Son what's happened
And she sees Him kneeling under the heavy weight of the Cross too
Continuing on now toward Calvary from the fourth station of the Cross
We left the Praetorium where Christ
Was sentenced and where he was turned over
To the Jewish people and they were offered Barabbas and they said
No give us Christ we'll crucify him
Following along the stations of the Cross passing station No 5
And they say at this point that
Simon a Cyrenean coming out of the country
On him they laid the Cross they made him bear it for Jesus
And they continued on the way of the Cross as we are now
Leaving place No 5 toward Calvary it's a long long way from here
You can see standing here between station No 5 and No 6
Two hundred yards at least up the steps toward Calvary's hill
All along it's a very narrow street ten or twelve feet wide
Shops on each side little children playing old men and women
Carrying their bread dressed in their long robes
Just as they did two thousand years ago
The music here in the background is a
Radio playing (is that an Arab station)
Still continuing up the way of the Cross toward Calvary
The voices you hear in the
Background are pilgrims from all over the world
All along the Via Dolorosa here there
Are beggars (I suppose mostly Arab beggars)
Passing station No 10 continuing on
To Calvary they are all along the way
They say that they are all blind
They say that the reason there are so many blind along
This part of the country is because of the dust
Everywhere the wind is blowing and the dust is flying
And of course there are germs in the dust that diseases their eyes
And the dust itself puts them out
On the way to Calvary we pass another beggar sittin' along the way
All kinds of shops pilgrims continuing on the same way we're going
Now closer to Calvary the way really gets crowded
It's still the same very narrow street though

Sur la Via Dolorosa

Nous sommes sur la Via Dolorosa, le chemin de
La Croix, venant de sortir du Prétoire
Où Pilate a dit à Christ : "Je me lave les mains de cette affaire"

Leur a dit de faire ce qu'ils voulaient de lui
Il n'y a pas de circulation ici, la rue est très étroite
De petits enfants jouent le long de la
Rue, la rue fait environ dix pieds de large
Tu vois la troisième station de la Croix
Où Christ a failli tomber sous le poids de la Croix
Il est à genoux, et la quatrième station de la Croix est là-bas
Plus de quarante ou cinquante pieds plus loin en direction du Calvaire
Où sa mère est venue à lui et lui a dit : "Mon fils, qu'est-il arrivé ?"
Et elle le voit à genoux sous le poids lourd de la Croix aussi
Continuant maintenant vers le Calvaire depuis la quatrième station de la Croix
Nous avons quitté le Prétoire où Christ
A été condamné et où il a été remis
Au peuple juif, et on leur a offert Barabbas, et ils ont dit :
Non, donne-nous Christ, nous le crucifierons
Suivant le long des stations de la Croix, en passant la station n°5
Et ils disent qu'à ce moment-là
Simon de Cyrène, sortant des champs
Sur lui, ils ont mis la Croix, ils l'ont fait la porter pour Jésus
Et ils ont continué le chemin de la Croix comme nous le faisons maintenant
Quittant le lieu n°5 en direction du Calvaire, c'est un long long chemin d'ici
Tu peux voir, debout ici entre la station n°5 et la n°6
Au moins deux cents mètres en montant les marches vers la colline du Calvaire
Tout le long, c'est une rue très étroite, de dix à douze pieds de large
Des boutiques de chaque côté, de petits enfants qui jouent, des vieillards et des femmes
Portant leur pain, habillés de leurs longues robes
Comme ils le faisaient il y a deux mille ans
La musique ici en arrière-plan est une
Radio qui joue (est-ce une station arabe ?)
Continuant toujours le chemin de la Croix en direction du Calvaire
Les voix que tu entends dans le
Fond sonore sont des pèlerins du monde entier
Tout le long de la Via Dolorosa ici, il y a
Des mendiants (je suppose que ce sont surtout des mendiants arabes)
Passant la station n°10, continuant sur
Le chemin du Calvaire, ils sont tout le long du chemin
On dit qu'ils sont tous aveugles
On dit que la raison pour laquelle il y a tant d'aveugles le long de
Cette partie du pays, c'est à cause de la poussière
Partout, le vent souffle et la poussière vole
Et bien sûr, il y a des germes dans la poussière qui donnent des maladies aux yeux
Et la poussière elle-même les rend aveugles
Sur le chemin du Calvaire, nous passons un autre mendiant assis le long du chemin
Tous les types de boutiques, les pèlerins qui continuent sur le même chemin que nous
Maintenant plus près du Calvaire, le chemin devient vraiment bondé
C'est toujours la même rue très étroite, cependant
