Te lo pido señor:
Si en tus enojos decides castigar al que ha cantado
Cuando haya quebrantado tu Ley Santa.

Haz que le ahogue el llanto de sus ojos,
Haz que padezca triste y desolado.

Siembra abrojos debajo de sus plantas,
Ponle canas y arrugas en la frente,
Pero dèjale voz en la garganta...

Porque bien sabes tú, Dios providente,
Que aunque todo lo sufra humildemente;
Ya no podrá vivir... si ya no canta.

Poem to the Singer

I ask you, my lady:
If in your anger you decide to punish the one who has sung
When he has broken your Holy Law.

Make the tears drown his eyes,
Make him suffer, sad and desolate.

Sow thorns beneath his feet,
Put gray hairs and wrinkles on his brow,
But leave him a voice in his throat...

For you well know, provident God,
That though he may suffer all this humbly;
He will no longer be able to live... if he can no longer sing.
