Comme s'il y avait des frontières dans l'air.
Non, je n'ai pas de frères et c'est moi et moi seul,
Des Rocheuses à l'Oural, qui souffle à fendre gueule.
On me dit bise ou vent d'Autan.
On me divise en vingt en cent
Mais c'est en vain qu'on jase autant.
Je suis le même Ouest ou le vent,
Vent de l'instant ou vent d'avant,
Vandale ici, là, vivifiant.
Je suis unique et de tout temps.
Je ne suis qu'un, je suis le vent.

Je suis né bien avant que vos savants n'inventent
Les voiles que je gonfle et, même, je me vante

S'il avait existé en ce temps là des yeux.
Je survolais déjà les Andes et l'Aventin,
Dévalais les avens, les vals et les ravins
Bien avant que la pluie ne les ait fait verdir,
Bien avant que la vie ne les ait fait fleurir
Et c'est moi, je l'avoue sans offenser le Diable
Et sa peau de serpent, qui me rendit coupable,
D'une haleine fiévreuse, d'avoir soufflé à Eve
L'idée qui l'évinça de son jardin de rêve.

To the other side of the globe in quieter places.
There, I forget my boasts, their embers and I become a breeze.
I lift the dress of the beauties I intoxicate,
Reviving in passing among the delighted passers-by
The desire to be the wind to whom everything is permitted.
