Out in front of the station doing a survey, why is it always me who’s getting stuck with this kind of work?
With a clipboard hanging around my neck, I’m ignored by everyone there.
“Never give your personal information to strangers,” or so they tell me.
The sky’s a pale blue color. What color will it be once I pass through the ticket gate?
A title match plays out on a video screen on the wall of a building—the first Japanese heavyweight champ.
A man in a suit does some shadowboxing, a high school girl takes his picture.
My meticulous senpai’s wife left him, or so I’ve heard.
He’s yelling and kicking his desk, and he just deleted some important data.
Other people have met someone too, started families, I guess.
What kind of meeting was it? For some reason, curiosity gets the better of me.
This survey’s going nowhere, I’m starting to lose confidence.
Please don’t avoid me like this,
“Very very strong.” Someone said that to me once.
“Very very strong.” It was about some kind of powerful bond.
“Very very strong.” Oh, being connected to someone,
“Very very strong.” When, where will we meet?

The boxing match is in its second round now, and a crowd’s starting to gather.
Someone’s shouting, “Knock him out!” and the champ gives a fearless smile.
A woman with her hair tied back walks straight towards me.
Despite my losing streak, she says, “That’s fine.”
It feels good to be accepted, the tension starts to melt away.
“Being on your feet all day must be tough,” she says, with kind words of encouragement.
Without thinking, I tell her, “But sitting down all day must also be tough.”
No matter what, I don’t want to become someone who thinks his/her own job is the toughest.
On her thumb, written in magic marker: shampoo.
Casually, I see it and say, “Shampoo.”
She says in a small voice, “There’s a sale today, I wanted to make sure I didn’t forget.”
Her absent-mindedness is so cute.
“Very very strong.” Even if it’s not something dramatic,
“Very very strong.” I want to know about this thing called a “bond”.
“Very very strong.” Oh, I’m connected to someone,
“Very very strong.” Right now, where are they?

The next day’s paper announces the birth of a new champ.
It’s a media circus, with talking heads spouting off.
I buy a sandwich at a convenience store and finish it off in front of my office building.
My senpai who’s always at his computer is actually smiling a little today.
“I talked to her on the phone last night. She hadn’t answered her phone in some time.
Just being able to reconnect was enough to make me happy,” he said with a smile.
“How did you meet?” I ask, without thinking.
My senpai blushes like a schoolboy.
“Just laugh if I tell you.”
“That’s okay, I won’t laugh.”
Someone ten years his senior, but at that moment, he seemed like my classmate.
“I found her wallet at a crosswalk and returned it to her.”
“That’s so ordinary,” he said, embarrassed.
“Very very strong.” My heart rings like a timpani.
