Hôm nay tôi trở về thăm trường cũ
Nhiều nét đổi thay tường mái rêu mờ
Bên hiên hằng giờ tìm những bạn xưa
May ra có còn đôi đứa
Vẫn yên vui sống đời học trò.

Bâng khuâng đợi chờ người sao chẳng đến?
Hỏi lá hỏi hoa chỉ thấy im lìm
Cây dương đầu trường còn khắc hàng tên
Hoa leo phũ phàng đan kín
Tiếng ve ru nghe gợi buồn thêm .

Bạn cũ xa rồi, có người về đất buông xuôi
Năm ba đứa bạt phương trời
Hai thằng chờ đầu quân năm tới.

Ve ơi, hát gì điệu nhạc lâm ly
Khóc người biền biệt sơn khê
Cố nhân đi bao giờ mới về?

Hôm nay trở lại nhiều khuôn mặt mới
Thầy đó trường đây bạn hữu đâu rồi?
Bao nhiêu kỷ niệm hoa bướm ngày thơ
Vang trong nỗi niềm nhung nhớ
Có ai đi thương về trường xưa?

Old School, Old Love

Today I return to visit my old school,
Covered with moss and many changes new.
Beneath the eaves I spend each hour looking for my old friends,
Hoping some will still be here,
Still living a happy student life.

I wait anxiously, but why don't they come?
I ask the leaves, the flowers, but all is silent,
The poplar tree in the schoolyard still bears our carved names,
Now covered over by climbing vines,
The sound of cicadas fills me with even more sadness.

My old friends are far away, some have passed away,
Three or four have gone to faraway places,
Two are waiting to join the army next year.

Oh cicadas, why do you sing so sadly?
You weep for those who have gone to distant lands,
When will my old friends return?

Today I return to see so many new faces,
The teachers and the school are here, but my friends are gone.
So many memories of flowers and butterflies in our youth,
Now only a distant memory.
Is there anyone who, like me, returns to their old school with such longing?
