Ampel grün, ich will rechts abbiegen
Muß dabei auf Fußgänger achten
Alte Frau steht zögernd hilflos da
Und ich geb ihr lächelnd ein Signal
Endlich geht ganz langsam sie rüber
Dann kommt rot und ich schaff es nicht mehr
Zeitung holn, hat Kiosk denn noch auf
Kurz vor halb, und ab im Dauerlauf
Kinder stehn mit Fahrrad vor der Tür
"Hat schon zu" so rufen sie zu mir
Vielen Dank, daß ihr es mir gesagt
Ohne daß ich euch danach gefragt
Arbeit aus, ich freu mich auf mein Bier
Und mein Weib empfängt mich an der Tür
Und sie fragt, wie es denn heut so war
Was ich tat, und wen ich traf und sah
Was ich in der Mittagspause trieb
Wies mir geht, und ob ich sie noch lieb

The light is green, I'm making a right turn
I have to watch for pedestrians
An old woman stands there hesitantly
And I give her a smile and a signal
Finally, she walks across slowly
Then the light turns red and I can't make it
Time to get the newspaper, is the kiosk still open?
Almost half past, and I'm sprinting off
Kids are standing in front of the door with their bikes
"They're closed," they shout to me
Thanks a lot for telling me
Without me even asking
Work is over, I'm looking forward to my beer
And my wife greets me at the door
She asks how my day was
What I did and who I met
What I did on my lunch break
How I'm doing and if I still love her
