Auch wenn es überschwänglich ist
Und scheinbar für die Ewigkeit,
Als gelte es für alle Zeit,

Dass das dann doch wie nebenbei
Verpufft, entfernt aus der Kartei,
Ein Leben wie ein Paukenschlag
Vergehen muss an einem Tag,

Und in der letzten Stunde dann
Nichts dir die Zeit anhalten kann,
Auch keiner hat Gevatter Tod
Wohl jemals mit Erfolg gedroht,

Und doch, wenn ich so Bilder seh'
Aus schöner Zeit, dann tut es weh,
Dass sich nichts rüber nehmen lässt
In diese Welt des Hier und Jetzt,

Dass die oft herrlich warme Zeit
Verlorener Vergangenheit
Nicht mehr präsent ist wie zuvor.
Da steh ich nun, ich armer Tor

Und würd' mich gern an Weisheitslehren
Berauschen oder gar verzehren.
Ich hab' so gern gelebt und nun
Macht es mir Angst, mich auszuruh'n.

Dass alles Schöne endlich ist
Und oft nur das, was schändlich ist
Dir mahnend im Gedächtnis bleibt,
Stets wiederkehrt und Unfug treibt,

Und dass das Glück so flüchtig ist
Doch das, wonach man süchtig ist
Und an das Schreckliche gemahnt,
Im Rad des Werdens fest verzahnt,

Es gibt Geläuterte, die meinen,
Man würd' sich dann mit sich vereinen
Und selig in den Himmel schweben,
Jedoch verzeiht mir - ich will leben.

Zum Leben ward ich doch geboren,
Dem Leben hab' ich mich verschworen,
Und ach, des Todes Possenspiel
Scheint mir noch nicht das rechte Ziel!

Ich ahn's, jetzt wär' es an der Zeit
Für Wunsch- und Körperlosigkeit.
Erleuchtung ist jetzt das Gebot,
Sie hebt dich fort aus deiner Not,

Und ja, ich hab' es auch studiert,
Mit Inbrunst selbstlos meditiert,
Und fühl' mich manchmal auch ganz klug,
Doch kenn' ich auch den Selbstbetrug.

Drum nehmt zum Schluss die Botschaft hin:
Ich scheine weiser als ich bin.
Erleuchtung ist mir noch so fern:
Ich lebe einfach schrecklich gern!

As if it were for all time,

That then, as if incidentally
Evaporates, removed from the file,
A life like a drumbeat
Must pass in a day,

And in the last hour then
Time cannot stop you,
Nor has anyone ever
Successfully threatened death,

And yet, when I see pictures like this
From good times, it hurts,
That nothing can be taken over
Into this world of here and now,

That the often gloriously warm time
Of the lost past
Is no longer present as before.
There I stand now, you poor fool

And would gladly intoxicate myself with teachings of wisdom
Or even devour them.
I have so gladly lived and now
It frightens me to rest.

That everything beautiful is finite
And often only that which is shameful
Remains in your memory as a warning,
Constantly returns and causes mischief,

And that happiness is so fleeting
But that to which one is addicted
And which reminds one of the terrible,
Firmly interlocked in the wheel of becoming,

There are the cleansed who believe
That one would then unite with oneself
And blissfully float to heaven,
But pardon me - I want to live.

For life I was born,
To life I have sworn myself,
And oh, death's jest
Does not yet appear to me as the right goal!

I sense, now it would be time for
Desirelessness and bodilessness.
Enlightenment is now the commandment,
It lifts you out of your misery,

And yes, I have also studied it,
Meditated selflessly with fervor,
And sometimes feel quite clever too,
But I also know self-deception.

Therefore, in conclusion, take this message:
I appear wiser than I am.
Enlightenment is still so far away for me:
I simply love living terribly!
