Santa Marta era una villa
De malvón y rosaleda,
Laureles en la vereda
Y plaza con catedral.
La gente se saludaba

Santa Marta tenía domingos
De asados y vino, de ruedas de amigos
En noches de truco guitarreada y canto.
En tardes de invierno fritando y mateando.
La gente tenía más tiempo y podía
Compartir las cosas simples de la vida
De aquella ciudad.

El progreso poco a poco
Fue cambiando a Santa Marta:
La televisión por cable
Y el acceso a la Internet.
La gente se fue olvidando
De sus cosas cotidianas
Ahora habla en otro idioma
Y vive en otro lugar.

Santa Marta juega al primer mundo
Gracias a los shoppings y a las hamburguesas
La comida rápida, la moda inglesa,
Se festeja Halloween ¡vaya sorpresa!
Pero nadie sale sin cerrar la puerta
Sálvese quien pueda se acabó la fiesta,
La siesta y la paz.

Santa Marta ahora está inundada
De música diet, de tiendas extrañas
Y en quintas y campos nadie planta nada
Todo viene hecho y hay papa importada.
Se persiguen cosas que a nadie interesa
Pero todo el pueblo pierde la cabeza
Si hay liquidación.

Santa Marta está informada
De la cumbre de Ginebra
Si la reina estuvo enferma
O Palermo erró un penal.
Todo el mundo vive al tanto
De un millón de cosas nuevas
Pero ya nadie se entera
Lo que pasa en su ciudad.

Y aunque es malo mantenerse aislado
Cuando todo el mundo está tan conectado
Si el diablo gobierna hay que tener cuidado
La cultura nunca puede estar de lado
No todo está en venta, no todo es mercado
árbol sin raíces no aguanta parado
Ningún temporal.

Santamarta

Santa Marta used to be a town
Of mallows and rose gardens,
Bay trees lining the paths
And a central square with a grand cathedral.
People greeted each other by name
And there were evening concerts
With young men hanging about
And a municipal band playing.

Windows had no bars
And no one thought to bolt their doors
And in the afternoons the deserted town
Invited long chats and siestas.
No wake, wedding or branding
That wasn't a national mourning or a fiesta
In that place.
Santa Marta had Sundays
Of barbecues and wine, of gatherings of friends
In evenings of cards and guitar and singing.
In winter afternoons, frying and drinking mate.
People had more time and could
Share the simple things of life
In that town.

Progress little by little
Was changing Santa Marta:
Cable TV
And internet access.
People started to forget
About their daily activities
Now they speak a different language
And live in a different place.

Santa Marta plays at being first world
Thanks to shopping malls and hamburgers
Fast food, English fashion,
Halloween is celebrated - what a surprise!
But no one goes out without locking their door
Every man for himself – the party's over,
The siesta and the peace.

Santa Marta is now flooded
With bland music, strange shops
And on farms and in fields no one plants anything
Everything comes ready-made and potatoes are imported.
Chasing things that no one is interested in
But the whole city goes mad
If there's a sale.

Santa Marta is up-to-date
On the G8 summits
Whether the Queen was sick
Or Palermo scored a penalty.
Everybody knows everything
About a million new things
But no one knows what's going on any more
In their own city.

And while it's bad to stay isolated
When the whole world is so connected
If the devil is in charge, we have to be careful
Culture can never be sidelined
Not everything is for sale, not everything is business
A tree without roots can't stand
No matter the storm.
